The current version of Corel PaintShop Pro is X4. But if you decide to get it, you might want to hold off a bit since Corel's normal release cycle for new versions suggests PSP X5 could be released some time in September. I stress, though, that I have no insider information about any release date. But before the release of a new version, the outgoing version usually is sold at a special price, so if you wait, you could get X4 cheap. At the moment you can buy a package of VS X5 and PSP x4, but I think it is full price for the moment.

I have a long history of using various versions of Adobe Photoshop, though I have PSP X4 and find it is very good for the things I need -- which I confess are probably not too demanding.

PhotoImpact, as you may be aware, has been dropped as a product by Corel.

Just to add to what Ken Berry said, you can try and download the trial version of PSP X4 and see if it meets your needs.
