DVD not Compatible issue

Post by yugoman1 »

Hello, I am a brand new user of Prox5 and am looking for some basic help......have previously used pinnacle HD14 but trying something different. First project... AVCHD files from a canon camcorder at 24mbs capture rate, created 30 mins project including transitions, chapters, and a menu. Gone to share, to render and burn disc, and everything seemed ok but when I try to play on my 2 different bluray players (Sony & Panasonic) they both tell me that I have an incompatible disc ? The discs are ones that I have always used-Verbatim 4.7gb DVD-R and Verbatim 8.5gb DL DVD + R.

Have tried now a Maxell 4.7gb DVD + RW and it works ? but really don`t want to be using RW Discs. Can anyone give me any Pointers please, I have loads of the first two discs that I have always used with Pinnacle & Cyberlink and don`t want to throw them away. Is VS Prox5 fussy about the discs that you use ?

VS is not fussy about the discs you use, but more often than not, it is the player which can be fussy. Can you tell us what burning properties you used? And also whether you did your editing, then jumped immediately to burning the disc. Or did you instead first render your project into a new AVCHD file, and then use that to burn the disc? I ask since VS will not allow you to burn an AVCHD hybrid disc -- which is what you are doing -- at a bitrate higher than 18 Mbps -- whereas your original video is 24 Mbps... It could thus be better to first convert the project to a new file -- albeit with a lower bitrate -- than to jump directly to burning a disc.

Thanks for the quick response....if this is the second time I have sent this reply, please ignore one of them

First of all, yes I have been going straight to burn disc as I have not yet learned how to create a disc image first. Can I ask what you mean by AVCHD Hybrid disc ?

The settings are as follows, and the only box that is checked is "Do Not Convert Compliant Mpeg Files."

MPEG files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 25 fps
Upper Field First
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 18000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

Hi
Yes you did post twice, not a problem.

You are burning High Definition video to a Standard DVD 4.7Gb this is what we refer to as a Hybrid disc, even though it is a standard disc you need Bluray player to play the video stream.

Unfortunately, VS will not allow the creation of a disc image (ISO) for either a full Blu-Ray or AVCHD hybrid disc. It will, however, allow you to create a Blu-Ray/AVCHD folder which is much the same thing. It is the BDMV folder you will find on a Blu-Ray or hybrid disc. The video itself is found in the STREAM sub-folder contained in that folder. And it is easy then to later transfer this folder to an actual disc using a program such as Nero or the freeware ImgBurn.

Thank you for this information, it seems this solves my problem..... I am familiar with the BDMV folder but I guess that if I did that, it would not include the menu`s / chapters as in VS, these are put into the project at a later stage.?

Also you mentioned the bitrate...........can I assume that if I burn AVCHD to Bluray disc, that I will get the full 24 MBPS quality ?

Creation of the BDMV folder is the culmination of the whole process (apart from burning an actual disc). In other words, it comes *after* you have created the menu. Therefore, the menu is converted to video and becomes part of the eventual BDMV.

As for the bitrate question, I am not absolutely certain as I don't use AVCHD to burn an actual Blu-Ray disc. I convert my HD footage -- which is mostly HDV format as opposed to AVCHD -- to Blu-Ray format before burning a disc. And VS allows a bitrate of 35 Mbps for that. But I think that if you burn AVCHD to a Blu-Ray disc, you may still be limited to 18 Mbps. Hopefully, though, someone with hands-on experience in this area may be able to provide a better answer.
