VS12 - interlacing on chroma key

Post by mooseman »

I'm editing videos that are 1080i (I forget the model number, but it's a Canon camcorder and I think it's actually 1440x1080.) When rendered normally, everything looks fine and the interlacing is not really noticable.

However, some of the videos have been resized, and the background replaced using a green screen / chroma key. When someone's hands move away from their body and over the background, the interlacing is very noticable and looks pretty bad. I have tried rendering using both default templates with Upper Field First, and custom Frame Based templates, none of which help to reduce the interlacing. Is there a way to reduce it, or am I stuck with it?

Thanks

Hi

What are the properties of your video file.?
Right click a clip and select properties, what are they?

Try changing the project properties (Alt+Enter) to use similar settings, use the Edit File Format type as Mpeg, compression Mpeg2.

If your original file uses Frame Based then use that throughout the editing and rendering.

Video properties:

PAL HDMV
H264 video, Upper Field First
24 bits, 1920x1080, 16:9
25.000 fps
Variable bit rate

I tried changing the Project Properties to the same settings, no luck though. Of course, another problem is, I need them saved as H264 MP4 at 1080p, but I've read in many places that VS doesn't let you do this, at least in this version.

Ok, after a lot of trial and error I think I might have it figured out... if I set it to Lower Field First, it seems to work fine. This is confusing, as everything I've read says you shouldn't mix field order, yet all the videos in the project are Upper Field First.

Anyway, that seems to be solved... is there a particular codec that people use to render to H264? I can always use Mediacoder to rip the video stream and put it in an MP4 afterwards.

Hi

Video Studio X2 is a little on the old side, later versions do give more scope.
Even so you should use the same interlacing options as the original, no idea why reversing the field order improves the quality?

Some things to try

1 / The option Share Create Video File AVCHD should give you a suitable template using H264

2 / Share Create Video File- is same as first clip available, this will render using the video files properties.

3 / If 2 above is available try using "Tools-make movie templates manager" to create your own template. using the "Add" option to use your video properties. Once you have created the template, best not to edit it, you may loose the settings, not your fault, just a glitch in the program.

4 / Go to Preferences-F6- tick Show Messages when adding first video.....
start a new project, add one of your clips, if you get a window prompting you to match the project properties, choose yes.

5 / You Tube----Why Mp4 when your source is Mpeg2

Try QuickTime using Mpeg4 Visual compression, you should be able to User Define the frame size.
Same for Avi-Div X. maybe compare size and quality to your original settings.

In the end I just gave up and downloaded a trial of VS X5. The templates are far better in this version, but it's annoying that the Bluray templates go up to 35Mbps, but apparently you can't make your own templates above 20Mbps?

Hi

Mpeg Transport Stream template can use Mpeg, this allows for 60,000kbps

I set 70000 just to cause the error message........
