Capture failed - corrupt files
After apparently successfully capturing dv from Sony Cam (V1P) and Panasonic NVGS400 via firewire, I get message 'capture failed, corrupt files'. This happens with VS4 and VS5 both of which are installed on this computer. Settings are lower field first, dv1. All patches are installed.
Thank you,
Col

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Trevor, thank you for your reply. I have tried what you suggested but it did not work. This computer has just been rebuilt before this problem started. Before it was rebuilt I could sucessfully capture dv from the camera inro Corel. I have just installed Windows Movie Maker to see if I could capture dv from the camera. It worked. I tried to import that AVI file from Movie Maker to Corel but Corel would not recognise it. Have you any other suggestions?
Thank you,
Col

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Hi
When you capture I assume you are choosing DV as the capture format.
This literally copies the video to the pc without re-coding, what you have is what you get DV-Avi at 13 gb per hour.
------------------------------
Do a quick test
Start a new project
add anything from the library sample clips
Share Create Video File - DV 16:9
--------------------------------
The new file will be DV-Avi, any problems in creating/ playing these files?
I dont think its a capture problem but you could try Win DV, this is a free program dedicated to DV Avi capture.

However I am not sure if the program runs with Windows 7

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Which version of movie maker did you install?
Windows live will only capture as wmv, whereas if you've installed an older version like MM2.1 you can capture as a dv.avi file, but this should be able to be imported into VS, as should the WMV file, so something odd is going on.
At least we know the firewire is working.
Can you import the MM aptured file into MM and edit it? This will tell us if this file has been captured correctly or not.
What made you think you had succesfully captured, only to be told the capture had failed?
Try installing windv a small stand alone app that just captures dv.avi files and see if this works for you.

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Hi Trevor,
As suggested when I tried to transfer AVI files from my library to the Corel Library, I get a message "Unable to open file........ File Format Mismatch". I cannot proceed beyond this point.
With regard to 'apparently captured', what I meant was that the dv stream from my camera connected successfully wih the program and I was able to control the "capture" with the buttons under the preview window. I clicked on capture when on the small box, I clicked ok, and the capture counter registered the elapsed time, but unfortunately, on termination, the capture failed window was displayed. The message read "capturing failed - the file created is corrupted and unusable. It will be automatically deleted".
Any other ideas?.

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Hi Graham,
Thanks for your advice. The version of Movie Maker I have installed (only yesterday) allows me to import directly from my sd camera and edit the avi files with transisitions etc. These same files cannot be imported into
Corel ProX5! I have also transferred avi files from my library into Movie Maker and edited them ok. So it appears to be a problem in the Corel Pro X5 itself? Is it possible there was a problem with the last update? Is it compatible with Windows 7 Ultimate?
Any other suggestions?

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Hi
Very strange that X5 does not like the DV-Avi.
I use a Panasonic GS 400 Dv-Avi, no problems with Video Studio Windows XP and Windows 7
Dv-Avi is probably the easiest format to edit, strange that you are having problems.
I assume you have re-installed the program?
It does look like a Codec issue, have you installed any Codec packs, K-Lite for instance?

Hi
We don’t normally recommend using codec packs, the program installation should provide all you need. However I noticed Corel do provide a link to K-Lite on their site.
Video files from a Digital Camera or Digital Camcorder will not import for editing in VideoStudio

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Hi Everyone,
I found what I think is the culprit to my capture problems. I experimented by uninstalling a trial version of Nero 9 which had been installed on the computer when it was serviced. Since I had experienced trouble with the intrusive nature of this program before, I decided to remove it. Lo and behold! I can now capture dv1 into Pro X5 as .avi files with no problems. I have no explanation for this other than it works! Maybe others can benefit from this. Many thanks to the guys in the forum who contributed.
Regards,
Col

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Hi
Thanks for the feedback Col, glad you managed to capture successfully.
Nero's InCd caused some problems but was associated with the CD /DVD Drive.
Dont think the firewire problem has been mentioned before, but will keep it in mind

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
Hi All,
I have similar problems, captured files in DV avi type-1 can not be used in VSP X3. Only Type-2 files are working. Took some time I discovered this (re-capture 3 times, then uninstall, re-install, uninstall, install X4 trial, uninstall X4, re-install X3). Previously I had VSP 8 and 11 which had no problems with the file type or size.
Using a hint above, I uninstalled my Nero BurnLite10 but did not solved the problem.
Any ideas?
Recently I discovered another problem: longer captures do not work, can not be inserted into the time-line. Not even played in the preview window, only the audio track is played but the quality is bad and crashes the program soon. The files are practically 1.7 and 2.8Gb (DV-avi type-2), so I had to re-capture them in DVD mpeg format (resulted in 550 and 900 Mb size). Then I tried to play the avi files in another applications and worked fine (Winamp, MediaPlayer, etc).

Re: Capture failed - corrupt files
I have no problems loading huge DV avi files (>5GB) into Vs X4 or X5. In fact I just tested with a 2 hour file (~27GB) and had no problems loading, previewing or editing. I don't have X3 so can't comment about that.
