X5 .mov audio out of sync in project

Post by kellyfairchild »

Hello, I'm trying to create a music video in the latest trial of X5 (with SP1 and latest QT) with not much luck as the audio/video sync keeps changing.

I've imported all my .MOV files into a project library, files ranging from 50mb to 1gb in size.

Clip properties are:

Video Track 1:
24bit, 1920x1080
29.970 frame/sec
Sound Track 1:
Compression: 16-bit Little Endian
48K, 16bit, stereo

From the get-go, when I Preview or Clip trim view any video segment, the audio is slightly out of sync. I've confirmed the original clip file is fine.

Since I am trying to sync only the video portion of the clip to a pre-recorded audio file I went ahead and lined up a few video clips with the audio file and it see if it would export in in sync but no such luck. Even after synching my video to my pre-recorded audio, the export is out of synch.

X5 looks like a decent program but if I can't even preview my clips with a good audio synch I think this X5 is tremendously flawed.

Does anybody have any suggestions to quickly try before I abort X5?

Hi

HD video may require Smart Proxy, this will/should improve timeline playback.
View Settings- Smart Proxy manager-File manager, should list the proxy files?
The clips played in the timelines should be in sync.............

I assume you are muting the video clip and adding an audio clip to the voice or music track.

Try creating a video to Share Create Video File - Mpeg4 HD

In the Create Video File window choose Options, then deselect Smart Render

-------------------------

Did your camera come with any software, and if so have you installed it?
Some manufacturers provide codecs that match their video types.

Thanks Trevor,

unfortunately I have tried the Smart Proxy and that didn't make a difference, still out of sync. I've also tried making the video as you suggested. I synched up a couple video clips to my pre-recorded audio file and did an mp4 export. The audio was once again out of sync.

I'm beginning to wonder if X5 is not handling the apple .MOV correctly.

Unfortunately all my raw footage was supplied to me as .mov and I don't have any particular specs or codecs from the camera equipment that was used.

I've been trying out some MOV files in X5 to see where the problem might lie. In my cases, I've found that the audio is perfectly fine. It's the video that goes out of sync. In one case I have a 33 minute MOV file where the video finishes 22 seconds too soon. The Info window shows no differences in lengths between the video and audio to suggest there might be a problem.

I have a license for Quicktime Pro, and was able to extract the video and audio streams and save to separate MOV files from the Quicktime Player. Using those files in X5 on different tracks, the video and audio was perfectly in sync while previewing and after sharing to another format.

I have another MOV file where the video finishes in about 15 seconds while the audio goes on for another 33 minutes. Extracting the video and audio streams to separate MOV files was the only way I could edit them in X5. The streams were perfectly in sync as separate files, but way off when contained in the same MOV file.

The MOV files I experimented with had DV/DVCPRO NTSC video and 16-bit Little Endian audio.

You may want to try and install the AC3 codec and or the latest QT that you can download at http://apple.com/quicktime/download/

Thanks Kingston for troubleshooting. Interesting you found the same issues relatively. Far too much work to separate audio from hundreds of .mov files only to use a brand new product like X5 which shouldn't have these bugs.

I've found that Sony Avid Studio to have the same problem but Cyberlink PowerDirector 10 seems to be ok at this point. All audio syncs flawlessly and it also has multi-frame display for clips in the timeline which I think is critical when syncing audio to video. I think I'll just go with PowerDirector 10 and get on with my editing.

Thanks for your help.

Hi Guys

Just run a test with a video recorded with a canon 7d, 1920 x 1080 x 25fps
Converted to QT mov-Mpeg4 using same properties.

No problems as far as I can see, I will convert to other formats to see what I get?

Kingston, when you say the "video that goes out of sync" 22 seconds is like a lifetime.

When you view the properties are the number of frames the same?

kellyfairchild If you are having problems with other editors as well as Video Studio, then maybe its a file or system problem.

If you can make a sample available we would be able to test your file.
I believe 4Shared allows for 2 Gb upload limit?

Lata, Yes, the number of frames is correct and the length is correct. The video is playing back at a faster frame rate than it should be, but it's not linear in all cases, it one case it's logarithmic, where everything really starts to go out of sync in the last 5 minutes or so. The last 22 seconds of video is black. I have to move the timeline pointer back 22 seconds from the end of the clip to see the last frame of the movie. Very strange. I tried earlier versions of Quicktime, but got the same results.

Some video editors play it back correctly, but some do not.

Just tried using Cyberlink PowerDirector 10 trial and it plays all files in perfect audio sync so there's nothing wrong with my files. The fact Sony Avid and X5 both have the same sync issue and PD10 does not makes me think it's a codec or 'general' type of issue and not specifically program related.

I'd consider using PD10 at this point but editing in the timeline is brutally slow AND their ruler increments only go as low as 1 second, where X5 can drop to 1/6 second.

Both, and all editors that I know, go to 1 frame increments. With video, you usually don't talk in fractions of a second, it's frames.

Are you sure it's "Sony Avid?" Avid Studio is from Avid. And according to some posts, Avid Studio has been bought by Corel.
