Restoring trashed file into catalog?

Post by klausw »

I keep getting bitten by the bug (or UI oddness) where ASP deletes pictures I wasn't intending to delete, but that's not the reason I'm posting - looks like that part is a known issue, or a side effect of the nonstandard way ASP handles selection and navigation.

My question is what the recommended way is to restore the picture again. If I notice immediately, I can use Edit > Undo, but usually I only find out much later when I can't find a picture and check the OS trash folder.Currently my workflow for that is something like this:
  • in filesystem view, show my Ubuntu "Trash" folder, and filter for pictures flagged "keep"
  • open the Trash folder in the native filemanager, and restore (untrash) the files. Now the picture is back at the original location in a Pictures/ sub-folder, but it's not appearing in the ASP catalog.
  • Navigate to the restored location of each restored picture using ASP's "file" view and do a quick import to add it back to the catalog.
It's of course tedious to do these steps one by one. Am I missing something easier here? Is it safe to re-import the entire Pictures/ folder into the existing catalog, or will this create duplicates or confusion? Or can I check for pictures in a particular folder tree that aren't registered in the catalog? I hesitate to experiment with this, I'm admittedly still somewhat confused by how imports vs downloads and catalogs work.

(Now that I think about it, it seems odd to be discussing workflows for restoring accidentally deleted pictures. ASP seems to be temperamental sometimes.)
