Cant find a way to import about 400 jpeg images on a DVD(not protected) into the library of VSX5.I have tried various options from the DVD or a folder on the hard drive that also contains the images. How do I do this
I hope to get them showing on the project as a slideshow at the end. If and when I do import them into the project they will need to be resized in the overlay track by dragging to keep the aspect ratio. There are landscape and portrait pics. Can I group them together in ie landscape order and then apply attributes to all to avoid having to do this individually, if so how

Not sure what the various options you have tried are Kenneth - but the way that works for me is -
with the library that you want your pictures in open in X5 click on the "Import Media Files" icon in the very top left corner - thats the one that looks like an opening folder.
In the new window which opens browse to the folder on your hard drive - or the DVD.
Click on the first jpeg in the list - go to the last one - hold down the 'Shift' key (the key with an up arrow on it) and while holding it down click on the final photo - all should now be selected.
Now click on 'Open' in the 'Browse Media file' window and all files will appear in your library.
Note if you import from the DVD you will need to leave the DVD in the drive throughout your editing - better if done from a folder on your hard drive.
You can now click on the first thumbnail in the library - go to the last thumbnail and again hold down shift while you click on the last one - all will now be selected.
Left click over the selected photos and while holding the mouse key down drag the photos into the overlay track - release the mouse key and all photos will be in the overlay track.
*IF* all the photos were the same orientation (say landscape) I would use the following procedure - but your mix of landscape and portrait may require a slightly modified procedure - how many of your 400 are portrait?
first adjust the first photo in the timeline so it fits the screen the way you want.
Now RIGHT click over the photo in the timeline and choose 'Copy attributes' from the flyout.
now click on the second photo in the timeline - go to the very end photo - and again hold down the shift key while you select it - all photos from No.2 to the end will now be selected.
RIGHT click over the line of selected photos in the timeline but this time choose 'Paste all attributes'
All photos should now match your first one.

I have now separated the landscape (194 pics) and portrait (183 pics) into different folders. When I get each set into the timeline, do I presume correctly that I then follow your workflow for copying attributes for each set?

Yes indeed - if you have that many of each then it is a very good idea to separate them - then handle each format as I have indicated above.

OK, Now I have all the portrait pics in the o/lay track with all the attributes the same.Trouble is, the project is now 51min 16sec long and the landscape pics are not yet in the o/lay track. Each pic is 7sec and 15 frames, so I will have to shorten them all to say 3 secs without transitions. Can I do this the same way as I have pasted the previous attributes, that is, shorten them all in one go?There are other images in the project with transitions before the above portrait pics that I dont not want to affect.

VideoStudio has a strange quirk in that it does not allow you to change the image duration of multiple images that are in the overlay track.
BUT
there is a work around which is not to complicated.
Select all the images you want to change by using the click on first - shift + click on the last.
with them all selected left click on the block and while holding the left key down push the images up into the main track.
now while they are all still selected click on the small 'Edit' near the top left corner of VideoStudio.
from the drop down choose "Change photo/color duration" - in the small window which opens set a new time - note that the figures here are - Hours, minutes, seconds and frames.
click OK in the duration box and all selected photos will change to the new time.
now with them all selected you can drag and drop the whole block back down into the overlay track.
