Pro X4 crashes

Post by fossil »

I have constant problems with Pro X4. Today I was trying to do a slide show (no video, only jpgs) and the program crashes on every transition or effect that I attempt to add. On my last project I reverted to Pro X2 which works much better but I admit there are some features on X4 that I like better. I'm not sure what to do other than not use Pro X4 at all. It doesn't seem to matter what I try to work with, video, audio or photos, it crashes. In the past thirty minutes it crashed six times. I'm pretty frustrated. I've used VideoStudio since version 10 but so far, Pro X4 is the one that I have the most trouble with.

I believe everything is upgraded, downloaded and updated. I'd like an honest opinion on whether or not I should keep trying or if there is even any idea of what's wrong. I'm going to have to reconsider if I expect to get anything finished these days.

What should I look into to see what I need to fix? Since I'm not using video, are there certain types of jpgs that X4 doesn't like or can't use? Is that possible? I admit I don't know if there are certain "codecs" for photos like there are for video. I just want to make a slide show! :D

BTW, I can't find a place to send dump files and even if I do send them, does anybody actually look at them and do they do something or see something helpful to me?

Hi

Sorry to hear you are having so much trouble with VS X4
Are there any other problems that you know of other than it crashes?

Some things to consider:-
000011404 - Resetting VideoStudio Pro X4 to Factory Defaults

This will re-set the library, so if you need it use Library Manager to export as a backup...
---------------------------------------

Un-install Quick Time
Re-Install version 7.5.5
This may affect I-Tunes, if you use that feature?
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26

Some users had problems running later versions of Quick Time, problem similar to your's, random crashes. Even though you are not using QT files the program as far as i know requires QT.

---------------------------

Jpeg Images, Progressive types may cause problems for some programs, generally they are Baseline, right click an image and select properties....

Thanks for responding.

I don't detect any other problem when it's crashing. It seems to be centered on using transitions and effects, either adding them or customizing them. I went into Pro X2 and did the same processes and it didn't crash. I will however reinstall QuickTime to this older version than I currently have as you suggested and I did reset the defaults. I also don't see anything on the jpg properties to cause trouble but who knows?

I shall experiment more.

Today I thought I'd try X4 again. I opened the program and tried to add a video. It crashed during loading. I opened X2 and added the exact same video and no problem. I just edited that same video for almost an hour without any crashes. I would upgrade to X5 on a trial basis but I'm not paying for yet another upgrade. That would be my fourth or fifth upgrade. I've paid enough to Corel, I do believe. :) I have officially waved the white flag. Corel, 1. Consumer, 0.

Thanks again.

Hi

Just thinking out loud...............

I assume you have re-installed Video Studio X4, and did you install as administrator.
You could try creating a new user account and install from that, remove the new account after installation?
000005470 - How to manually remove VideoStudio Pro X4?

Also have you installed the service packs
http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=1100002
----------------------------------------
I have problems running X5 on a windows 7 64 bit laptop, I have to run in XP Compatibility Mode, the program does not crash but does not perform as it should.

---------------------------------------

If you use the samples from the library does the program crash, or is it just associated with a particular video file type?

-----------------------------------

I assume each crash gives an error message?
--------------------------------

The project you created using X2, are you able to open this in X4, make a copy of the VSP before you try............

last thought, i just dont know?????

I really appreciate your response but if it's this much trouble, honestly, I have better things to do with my life! LOL!! I've tried all sorts of files, jpgs, whatever and it doesn't seem to matter what I do, remove, upgrade or update. I'll finish this current project on Pro X2 and then I'm running like the wind to my Linux laptop and learning one of their open source video editing programs. I have several on that laptop already and just need to sit down and get serious. While no program is perfect, X4 is making me greyer than I already am. :D

Thank you!
