Panasonic HD 1080/50p editing & BD burning

Post by Andy3T »

I have just upgraded to VideoStudio Pro 5 (from 4) as 1080/50p editing is now available in the upgrade; I shoot my source footage on a Panasonic HS900. Whilst I will edit my footage at 50p I cannot, of course, create a video file to burn to a BD without losing image quality, with Blu Ray only accepting a 24 fps frame rate. I understand after editing my footage in 50p I will then need to re-encode the video file to back to 24 fps if I am to maintain full '1080' quality and I'm wondering which of the 'drop-down' video file templates I should be using to achieve this?

I cannot seem to find anything in FAQ that exactly 'hits the spot'.

I'd be grateful for some guidance and some experiences.

Many thanks.

Hi Andy

and welcome to the forums

I don't use HD at the moment, not sure which way to jump, whether to use tape based HDV or memory based, in which case i was considering the Panasonic HS900

Sorry i digress

You should be able to use Make Movie Templates Manager to create a template to your video files properties
Thats assuming that Share Create Video file -Same as first Video is not available.

I made one using these properties..............

MPEG Transport-Stream Files
24 bits, 1920 x 1080, 50 fps
Frame-based
(HDMV-PAL), 16:9
H.264 Video
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 20000 kbps)
Audio data rate: 256 kbps
Dolby Digital Audio, 48 KHz, 2/0(L,R)

The template will show adjacent to the Custom option from Share Create Video File.

BD is not 1080p50 compatible. You can create a 1080p50 file with VSX5 but you can only play it bsck from yr PC or from a mmplayer, not from a BD player.

That´s true and it´s NOT true ...

True is: 1080/50p is NOT Bluray standard

But also true is: In example a Playstation 3 and the newest BluRay Players can play 1080/50p files. But you will not find software, that can create a BluRay disc with menues, chapters, intros, etc. in 1080/50p quality - Only the single videofile burned on a disc can be read by those players in it´s high quality. BUT still wait for the near future - I assume a standard for 1080/50p BluRays WILL come.

Else create your 1080/50p movie and put it on a USB stick or a memory card - most players also can handle this.

In moment I recommend to convert your videofile to a BluRay compatible format name HDTV BASIC, that also supports 50 frames per second. The only issue is the lower resolution of 1280 x 720, but this is way better than having a framerate of 24 or 25 frames cos this will always result in a stuttering video.

Do not delete your original 1080/50p files, keep them for the future ...

Thanks all for your thoughts; I guess anything that I do before Blu-ray becomes 1080/50p compatible (if it ever does) will have to a compromise!

Lata, I have no hesitation at all in recommending the Panasonic HS900, it's an incredible bit of kit capable of stunning video footage.

Thanks again.

Further to my recent posting; I have tried to access my Corel Project file (.VSP)to render the material

in 1280 x 720, as suggested by flashclicker, but my recently installed VSX5 program is "unable to read" the file and furthermore nor can the still installed VSX4 program (the one that created the .VSP project file).

Any thoughts please?

Thanks

Hi Andy

How are you trying to open the VSP.?

Go to File-Open Project--navigate to find the VSP.

Although the VSP was created by X4, if you open with X5 and save, it will no longer open using X4.
However you can save as backward compatibility from the save window selecting the "save as type" reverts two versions.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for your speedy response.

Yes, I navigated to the project file as normal but that's when I get the 'unable to read file' message; the VSP is saved as a VSX4 type.

I've even tried 'insert media file to library' but this produces a 'file format mismatch' message.

Regards

Andy

Hi Andy

Can you e-mail the vsp, I will not be able to see the files, but should be able to open, at least i can try. View my Quick Guides for e-mail address......

Windows Explorer may show the file as a Corel VS X4 document even though it has been made with X5.
My PC shows them as Corel VS 12, this should not be a problem in opening the files.
