Post by clicknpics »

Hi first time on the board I have been a user of the old :) MSP8 editing program for some time,
just updated the PC and would like to use the New video studio x5, is this compatible with the Canon XLH 1 A HD camera,
any advice would be appreciated.

thanks

why not download the free trial of X5 and test it for 30 days - then you will be certain of compatibility not only with X5 but on your computer set up.

Hi Malcolm

We assume that camera is a HDV tape based connecting via firewire

There is an issue with Firewire IEEE driver and Windows 7, if you have problems read this post for more info on rollback of drivers?

Hi Trevor
yes it is a HDV tape fire wire into PC, works OK with MSP8 and windows XP, but the old PC died at the weekend just as I was finishing off the latest video,
thanks for the info on the drivers for the fire wire, presume that this is a problem with window 7, going to down load the trial program and try it out,
and thanks for the comments on the web site can not take the credit for the photographs it's the wife Caroline that
do's the photography, I just take the video.

thanks

Hi Malcolm

Yep its a Windows 7 issue, easy to check, plug in the camera via firewire and Device Manager should see the camera.

and for what its worth I also take the video and the wife Lynn takes the images.
I have a Panasonic TZ 9 that I use for digiscoping, but generally take movies with it.

Just one criticism regarding the web site, hope you don't mind.
When I view the gallery the image displays at the bottom of my screen, I have to use the scroll bars to view the full image, Unfortunately I have to do this for every image.
The top image/banners are forcing down the images, its a nice panorama shot by the way and works well. but maybe remove it from the Birds_1.html page?

Just viewed the Scenery, the second image in black and white is stunning, the clouds are so dramatic.........Regards to Caroline

I have a Canon HDV camcorder which works just fine with X5 under Windows 7 -- though as Trevor already noted, there was an initial problem with the Win 7 new Firewire driver. But it was easy enough to roll back to the legacy driver.

Although X5 captures HDV just fine, in fact I prefer to use a small freeware program called HDVSplit to capture my HDV. As its name implies, it also splits the incoming video by scene, and you can assign your own name to the captured videos, rather than use VS's rather more arcane naming system. Once captured, the files can be opened in X5 for editing.

Thanks all for the advice, just downloaded X5 and it works including fire wire capture, the only complaint I have is the lack of sound tracks, like to work in Dolby 5.1 surround sound using a lot of spot FX and background sounds, I think I have a work round X5 as up to 20 overlay tracks think it would be possible to use for audio tracks, going to try it out will report back on it

Thanks Trevor for the comments on the WEB site always appreciated good or bad , know what you mean, passed on your comments to Caroline she says thanks, I was redoing the WEB site when the old PC died now trying to recover the HTML files of the old HDD must backup next time :( .

Thanks again for the help
