Combining multiple video sources (transitions)

Post by klflote »

I have two videos of the same event that I would like to switch between. There is audio to sync to the video as well.

What I wanted to do was:
1) Put the main video in the main video track
2) Put the audio in the music track and aling with the main video
3) Put the secondary video in the overlay track. Align it with the audio and set the overlay to cover the entire screen.
4) Cut out most of the overlay video (spit the clip into sections and delete most of them).

That worked as far as it went -- the main video shows, interspersed with the secondary video, and everything is aligned with the audio. The problem is that the change between video perspectives is quite aburpt, but I cannot figure out how to make the transitions be seamless.

I added transitions to the beginning and end of each small clip on the overlay panel, but that didn't really make things seamless, particularly at the end of the clip -- there isn't anything to cross cut to, and if it fades to black then the main video pops up immediately when the overlay clip ends.

I tried splitting the video in the main track at the spot where the overlay comes in and adding a transition to the end of it; no matter what i try with the ripple settings, that throws the audio out of sync when the overlay is finished. I also tried deleting that section in the video track and moving the video from the overlay track into the video track; that was difficult enough to make sure that the sections were exactly the same length, but then I still have the problem with the transition lengthening the clip and throwing off the audio. I guess I could somehow figure out how to trim exactly the right amount of time from the clip I am inserting to solve that problem. Really, I guess I'd have to do that twice -- once for each transition -- because if otherwise the audio would be off in the clip being inserted. So I need to trim 1 second (or whatever) from the beginning; split it somewhere, and then trim 1 second from the end.

I think that I must be missing a much simpler way...

This is where skill in filming comes in.
You shoot your shots with the fact you'll be making cuts to alternate between two cameras.

Check out all films tv programmes etc, all they use is cuts between shots.
Why do you feel the abrupt changes aren't working?
Maybe move the cut a few seconds one way or the other to get a better change of shot.

Hi klflote

If you need a simple fade.....
Select the clip in the overlay track.
Select the Attributes tab, if you do not see it........Click the Options button (far right) to open the panel.

Below the Direction and Styles are two fade ramps.
Click to select and your clip will fade in.
The default duration is one third of the total length, adjust the pause durations by setting the slider immediately below the preview screen.

Once you apply this to the first clip, you can copy the affect to the other clips.
right click the first clip Copy Attributes.
Using Shift + Click the last clip to select all, right click and "paste attributes"

However I think you will have to set the pause durations for each clip.

Thank you Trevor! That is exactly what I was looking for.

Though then it took me a while to figure out how to control the duration of those fades. Just in case anyone else stumbles across this, the duration is controlled by the blue bar under the preview window. The start and end of that is the section played as-is: it will fade in until the start of the section, and fade out from the end of that selection to the end of the clip.

Hi

Happy you have managed to set the durations correctly.
Try using the digital clock to set say 3 seconds from the ends of the clip, drag the orange trim handles to the white curser/triangle
