My question is how to soft profile under Linux to my Canon Pro9000MKii.
- I have checked all available documentation, and have purchased (and read) the AfterShot Survival Guide
- I have a color calibrated monitor (Dell U2312HM http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/ha ... ew-10.html using a ColorHug)
- Ubuntu 12.04, using the ColorHug generated monitor profile (I did a sanity check against a MPix calibrated print and their TIFF, everything looks good).
- Sadly, I can't get any Canon icc/icm for the Pro9000MKii. It's just weird, or there is something that I don't understand. Canon even supplies icc profiles for 3rd party paper. So, while I can use Canon paper (say PhotoPlusGlossy PP201), and can select it from TurboPrint -- I can't soft proof for it ! I've even installed the Canon Print drivers on a windows box to see if I can extract or identify an icc/icm file for their paper. Nope.
Here's my plan:
- Use Red River paper, which has a full set of profiles that I can use for soft proofing in ASP. Output to jpeg in sRGB.
- Use Turboprint's paper color profiling to generate Turboprint compliant profiles for the Red River paper. Print the jpeg through the newly created Turboprint profiles.
Is this the most direct route to soft proof for my printer ? Is there another way to get the Canon paper/ink/printer profiles into ASP ?
Linux + Calib. Mon + TurboPrint = print calib confusion ?

Sorry, I don't understand...
Do you have the icc/icm files for the papers?
If yes, you can use the soft proof preferences to load them.
cheers

Re: Linux + Calib. Mon + TurboPrint = print calib confusion
Thanks AFX,
My dilemma is how to soft proof with ASP, when Canon doesn't provide icc files for Linux. I guess that's the simplest way to say it. Turboprint (which I love) only has Canon paper profiles and it doesn't accept 3rd party papers (it's a RIP not really a print driver, right?).
So, I think my only option for soft proofing with my Linux/TurboPrint/Pro9000MKii is to (1) rely on a 3rd party for the icc profile that I'll run on my monitor, and (2) have TurboPrint create the corresponding paper profiles for the printer.
I'm going to use Red River Paper, because they already have the profiles for the Pro9000MKii and it should be close to what I get with Turboprint.

Why should they?kumsa wrote:My dilemma is how to soft proof with ASP, when Canon doesn't provide icc files for Linux.
ICC Profiles for printers are not OS specific. Just grab them from the Canon web site or a Windows installation.
Turboprint works just fine with ICC profiles. From printer or paper manufacturers as well as home made custom profiles.I guess that's the simplest way to say it. Turboprint (which I love) only has Canon paper profiles and it doesn't accept 3rd party papers (it's a RIP not really a print driver, right?).
They just have a funky user interface for the profile loading so it is not really obvious and it might be that this only works in the Studio version. When I tested it, I only checked Studio, not the stripped down version because their web site indicated that the main difference is color profile handling.
When I tested Turboprint with my canon toy printer I actually used profiles I had generated myself with the ColorMunki software on Windows (did not want to waste paper for a decent profile with ArgyllCMS).
Nope. So, I think my only option for soft proofing with my Linux/TurboPrint/Pro9000MKii is to (1) rely on a 3rd party for the icc profile that I'll run on my monitor, and (2) have TurboPrint create the corresponding paper profiles for the printer.
Turboprint works just fine with third party profiles that can also be used for soft proofing.

Re: Linux + Calib. Mon + TurboPrint = print calib confusion
AFX, thanks ! I have the feeling that I'm closing in on a definitive solution.
All the best, Kumsa
Wouldn't that be wonderful ? Actually, getting the Canon icc profiles for the printers and paper combination is next to impossible. ICC profiles might not be OS specific, but the Canon software sure is. The icc files are all mixed in with no easily distinguishable characteristics. Basically, I don't have anything that I can verify.afx wrote:Why should they?

Terrific. I have upgraded to the Studio edition, and misunderstood their documentation. I'll have to think about using ColorMunki for special papers. But, in the mean while I'll book up on adding the icc profile to TurboPrint.

AFX, I will certainly check out Museo and the Canson papers. Being able to generate my own 13x19 on fine art paper is an essential step in publishing my work.

Re: Linux + Calib. Mon + TurboPrint = print calib confusion
Well, the third party profiles are usually available via the paper manufacturers, no need to use Canon for them. So only the Canon papers could be complicated.
But if you install a canon driver in a VM or so, you should be able to grab the profiles from c:\windows\spool\drivers\color (or so, don't remember the exact path right now...).
This should help to understand the names of the canon profiles:
http://kbsupport.cusa.canon.com/system/ ... E_ID=34060
And, the exe files that contain the Canon profiles often can be read with 7z on Linux, here is the output for the profile archive I just loaded from Canons web site:
