Re: unspecified error
A pleasant update: I tried to edit 2 more videos but VS crashed half way through the first one. I decided to clean up the Video Library since there were many more thumbnails than I had imported. Most were duplicates with new file names. After deleting all duplicate and unknown video files from the Library, I spent several hours doing all the actions that brought on the dreaded error and shutdown but everything worked perfectly. I felt confident enough then to invest the time and finish the other 2 videos that needed to get done and, again, it ran smooth as silk. Not even a hiccup. Finished in record time. Thanks again for getting me through this. I really thought I was doomed and was ready to shell out $$$ for an iMac.

Re: unspecified error
Hi Rich
Thanks for the feedback and glad you seem to have cured the issue, yep unknown files in the library, adding VSP by mistake instead of video files may eventually cause you problems.
Guess its just a matter of good housekeeping.
There is a Library Manager accessed from Settings, this will allow you to backup/Export, Import and Reset the library.
I have to admit that I do not use the library as a permanent storage but a temp location where a can place clips. So most of the time the library is pretty empty.
Enjoy the crash free editing

Re: unspecified error
OMG! Thanks for this post. I've been fighting with crashes for years and from the looks of it so have many others. I've spent the last several days reading posts from frustrated users who were experiencing crashes at all stages, and all the answers suggested solutions that either 1) I didn't understand or 2) I''d already tried. The only suggestion Corel support could make was to upgrade to the latest version (I'm using x2). But as I tried numerous times explaining to them, I tried that when I had the same trouble with version 7SE, then with 8 then 10 (new computer in between those two) and was still happening with 12 (on a new computer again).
Then I stumbled on this post and it rang a bell. My library had tons of thumbnails in it. I use VS mainly for vacation video, so when I get back I plug my JVC mini-DV camcorder in and run the capture step. That's the one phase VS never crashes in (knock wood) but it ends up with hundreds of clips. (typically I'll have 6 to 10 hours of video all in short clips (5 secs to 30 secs maybe). A lot are not used in the final video - I want the end product to be no more than 45 minutes. In order to combat the crashes I've developed the habit of first saving the total as 4 or 5 different projects, then delete the total duds before doing any serious editing. But, I was just shortening the time-line - never thought of deleting the unused thumbnails from the library. After seeing your post, I tried deleting all the thumbnails from the library, and eureka, I was able to play the whole project start to finish without incident. Previously I would be lucky to play any more than 2 minutes worth before I would get the dreaded "Corel VideoStudio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" screen. Nothing in the manual mentions not having too many clips in the library. I guess we're just supposed to know that.
There are two other times I crash - One I can live with the other still has me pulling my hair. During rendering it will crash If and only if I use the preview "feature" of the share step. I can live with that because I'm just putting my 4 or 5 shorter .vsp files back together and I've already previewed them in the edit step. If I don't touch the preview I'll render and burn just fine.
The other is after I've exited. I save my project, then exit and a few minuted later, up pops the "Corel VideoStudio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" screen again. Contrary to what an earlier answer to a different post said this a a WHOLE lot more than just inconvenient. The next time I start VS, it will ask if I want to recover the previous project. I say yes, and it does recover most of it, but sometimes I'll have to re-link a couple of images (that haven't moved since the first time) or re-do one or two of my edits, then re-save. I suppose if I said no to the "recover previous project" maybe the one I saved before will still be intact, but I'm scared to try it, know what I mean?
This one, too is considerably less frequent since I found an article in the "knowledgebase" about deleting temporary files, but I do still get it sometimes.
I think I'm to the point after several years where the thing is kind of useable, but any comments anybody else may have to improve it further would be appreciated.

Re: unspecified error
Hi
Nice to hear you have improved the performance of video studio.
I do not use the library as a permanent source for my files.
Deleting files from the hard drive will cause any files in the library to be un-linked, VS just does not know where they are. if theses clips are under a library folder then you don’t see the problem.
You could effectively have hundreds of clips that VS cannot find. Not surprising that sometimes the program complains
Adding VSP project files can be particularly troublesome.
Generally my library is empty, I know where my files are, on the hard drive in a dedicated folder- one for each project. Designated as the working folder.
--------------------------------------
Crashes after closing the burner module, result in a re-link request, almost certainly the files used in the project have been altered in some way on the hard drive, i know you are gonna say you haven’t changed anything. Do you use an external hard drive for some of your clips? maybe that is turned off?
------------------------------------
Burning a DVD
If you are having problems with this process then create a video file first, convert the project to a single Mpeg2.
Then use this to burn the disc.
Read my guides

---------------------------------------
Random Crashes
Uninstall QuickTime Player
Re-Install QuickTime Player to version 7.5.5
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL26
Has been known to cure some problems. but may affect I-Tunes if you use that.
--------------------------------
Restore the program to its default state
Re-name the folder 12.0 to "12.0 Copy"
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio
Starting Video Studio will re-create the folder from new, the library will also be re-set.
If you need the library, back it up via the Tools -- Library Manager
Good luck
