unspecified error
I have VideoStudio Pro X3. I don't do anything fancy, just edit videos of my performances to post on YouTube. Fade in from black, a few titles over the video, some dissolves and fade out to black. I have dealt with the occasional crash over the years but recently I have to save after each action because it crashed so frequently. Now I can't do anything without getting the same message I get after each crash:
"The program has encountered an unspecified error and has stopped functioning.
Please contact Corel Technical Support and send the dump file for analysis.
C:\Users\Rich\AppData\Local\Temp\vstudio_1.6.2.69_20120712_135244.DMP"
The dump file name is different each time.
This is followed by "Corel VideoStudio Pro has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."
The program does not function at all now. I tried re-installing with the disc which actually uninstalled it so installed it again with the disc. This had no effect. I then restored the defaults as described in "Resetting VideoStudio Pro x4 back to factory defaults" which was suggested in another post in the forum. This had no effect. My original videos are gone but my projects are still intact.
How can I make this program work smoothly?

Re: unspecified error
I can get mine to open...at least so far. Sometimes I have to log off and on or even restart, but I eventually get it to open. I'm really amazed there is no tech support at all. Good luck.

Re: unspecified error
Hi Guys
and welcome to the forums
Sorry you are having problems with Video Studio X3.
Laura05....Corel does have a support section accessed from your Corel account, assuming you have registered the software?
If the program ran ok yesterday then something must have changed to cause a problem.
Auto Updates---PC scan/registry cleaners?
Have you considered using the computers System Restore to before the problem started?
How are you trying to start the program?
You should be logged into your PC as administrator.
You must run the program using administer rights, from the Start menu right click the Corel Video Studio Pro X3 icon and choose "run as admin"
You can also run in XP compatibility mode, Start menu right click the Corel Video Studio Pro X3 icon and choose properties-Compatibility Tab.
Ok, so what’s going wrong?
richguibilo
If you can start the program?
1 / If you were to work with the samples from the library do you have problems?
2 / What type of video files are you using, right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, what are they?
Nesting of Video Studio Project Files.
Confusions between Video Files and the Project file can cause some problems, especially if you add a VSP to the timeline, known as nesting, ok if you are aware of doing this, but if done by mistake can cause many problems.
Quicktime versions have caused problems for some users, causing random crashes.
Please try re-installing QT 7.5.5

Re: unspecified error
Mine just blew up for the first time ever (studio ultimate x5) today. Was working fine and then the same message as the others. Who do I send the .dmp (as requested by Corel). Is my only option a re-install as it clearly wont restart with a simple reboot.

Re: unspecified error
A number of steps that you can take to fix this,
If you're VS X3, I suggested to download and install all updates for VS X3 at http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=1000016
For VS X5 reset the software first by following these steps : http://corel.force.com/index/articles/e ... lt-Setting
If that did not work then you can try reinstalling via the CONTROL PANEL.

Re: unspecified error
First of all Thank You Thank You THANK YOU! for responding and offering assistance.
I followed the link you posted to re-install QT 7.5.5 and got the following message from QuickTime for Windows: "A newer version of QuickTime is already installed. This installation cannot proceed while the newer version of QuickTime is installed." I clicked OK and the installation was cancelled.
Then I opened VS and worked with the sample files in the library. I created a test project with several clips, transitions and fades without a hitch. I could even upload it to youTube with no problem.
Next I had to import some video files from the video camera I always use (Alesis VideoTrack) because all my files were gone after restoring defaults and re-installing VS. I was happy to see that all those files were available to import via the HDD option so I imported those as well as the ones in the camera. No problem.
I placed several of them into the timeline to view the properties. They were all File format: 3GPP File, Video type: MPEG-4 SP Video, Attributes: 24 bits, 640 x 480, Frame rate: 30.000 frames/sec, Audio Type: MPEG AAC Audio, Attributes: 32000 Hz, 16 Bit Stereo, Bit rate: 96 Kbps. (Some had a video frame rate of 29.999 or 30.001 frames/sec) I couls play them from the timeline with no problem...a definite improvement.
Then I opened my most recent project in the timeline. It is a compilation of song segments each separated by an album transition. I want to use this as a sample of my work when scouting for gigs. When I tried to play it I got the same unspecified error message at about 00:1:30. This is preceded by strange clicks and pops in the audio. I restarted VS and opened the same project in the timeline. Then I checked the properties of each clip and they were all as described above until I got to the last one. The window that came up was for Project File Information and didn't contain any of the information shown for the other clips. Somehow the Project was in the Video Library and I used IT rather than the recorded clip. I deleted the clip from the project and saved it with a new project file name. I then deleted the previous project from the "My Projects" folder.
I was able to add the actual recorded clip to the end of the new project, trim it, add the transitions and fade to black and, best of all, upload it to youTube. It was a beautiful thing.
Could it be that the clip that was actually a project (with titles and transitions) was the culprit in my troubles? I will also mention that I ran CCleaner.com Register Cleaner and installed 2 VS Pro X3 updates before I began the above procedure.
In any case, I closed VS after the above successes to write this response so I look forward to checking the performance in greater depth over the next few days. If the problem resurfaces I will post again.
Thank you again for your help.

Re: unspecified error
Hi Rich
Nice to hear some good news, glad you are managing to edit your projects.
The reference to Re-Install QT was to revert to 7.5.5, this would of course require you to uninstall QuickTime first.
In the past there was some problems and installing 7.5.5 seemed to cure them, however if you are not having creases leave well alone, by the way X4 provides QT7.5.5 afaik
Nesting of Video Studio Project Files.
yes if you have inserted a VSP without knowing can cause you problems, especially if it is edited again, or its content is changed.
Hopefully you are all singing and dancing again.
You upload it to youTube. It was a beautiful thing, are you going to share it with us?

Re: unspecified error
Nice of you to ask, Trevor. This is the one that seems to have caused the problems. Nothing fancy. Recorded in my family room with the Alesis VideoTrack but it does the job. I have an original song I want to create a "real" music video for. Hopefully VS will help me make that happen. Thank you again.

Re: unspecified error
Hi
Thanks for the link, the album transitions work well, nice sounds as well........
Real Video---well the last version to use this was X2 (VS12) at least I cannot see any reference to it using X3 onwards.
I assume you want it for the internet and maybe a web site.
There are of course other options, WMV and Flash, everyone should be able to view those.
Unfortunately I do not think VS supports Real Video any more.

Re: unspecified error
VS X5 Pro is working fine on my desktop, but - to free-up the desktop for other purposes - having it also on the laptop I'd hoped to burn DVDs on that, importing projects from the desktop via homegroup. All goes well until the final stages of setting up the burn when an unspecified error message comes up, with details of a dumpfile. Resetting factory defaults as advised above hasn't cured the problem, & the only similar problem I've seen so far on Knowledgebase concerns the end of the burn rather than before it starts. Is the process I'm trying flawed, or might this be solvable? Thanks.

Re: unspecified error
Hi TAMc
Are you able to burn a disc using the desktop, you can create a DVD Folder rather than burning a disc, saves on making those coasters, do you get errors doing this?
If you are having problems burning on the desktop then we need to know the workflow you are using, are you simply doing Share Create Disc, or are you creating a video file file first, then using the video file to burn the disc.
Using the network.............
how are you exporting the project across the network, are you moving all files, or are you simply moving the VSP, project file, this would mean the project is viewing the files from the Laptop that reside on the desktop?
Video Studio can create a Smart Package, this literally copies all files used in the project and bundles them within a folder. Save this to a memory stick, and you can move the entire project files and all to the Laptop.
I would advise that you try the Smart Package option.

Re: unspecified error
Once again, very much appreciate your help. I used share create disc, operating VS X5 Pro on the laptop but drawing video files across from the desktop via homegroup. I'll follow through what you suggest & see where that takes me. This isn't a serious problem as I can work around by sticking to using the desktop - I really do like X5, find it great to work with & have some very good early results; but it would be good to better understand these things & get best value from the various systems available.
Not wanting to be overly negative & accepting this might be down to my lack of knowledge, but Corel tech support hasn't been great so far, & it's not a lot of good the system telling us to send them a dumpfile without giving easy access to the means for doing that. But life's too short, & we'll get there ........

Re: unspecified error
Hi
It may well be the fact that you are streaming the files over the network that is causing the problem.
I assume you are using wireless, or is your laptop hard wired to the network.
You need to confirm that the Laptop will complete the DVD using files on the laptop and not through the network.
Once you can successfully burn a DVD then you can try using the network
But as mentioned you will find the Smart Package useful for what you are trying to do.
You would only have to run the one pc to edit the work

Re: unspecified error
For homegrouping, the laptop's hard wired into the BT hub. I did wonder whether that might be the problem but it's just the same when importing a (.avi) video file directly from the laptop's C drive. Just won't progress from the '1. Add Media' box. It obviously doesn't like it at all as after the unspecified error dialogue box comes up the VS program boxes 'grey out', the program stops working & often refuses to close - I have to force shut down. I tried reinstall + SP1 download but no change. As I said, not a major problem for me as I mainly use the desktop on which the system's performing great - just a bit puzzling.
