Explain video size increase

Post by GaryG45 »

Hi,
I don't understand why a video increased in size so that I cannot burn a DVD. The video was originally a 1 hour 26 min TV show on a VHS tape. I used a VCR/DVD combo unit to create a DVD, and created a MPEG2 on a hard drive using a conversion program. The size of the DVD is 2.89GB and the size of the MPEG2 is 2.85GB. I imported the MPEG2 into a library folder in VS Pro X5, and dragged it into the video track. A right click to look at Properties in both the library and video track shows a size of 2,998,518KB, which is 2.86GB. I went straight to Share without adding titles or anything to the video. I selected Create a Disc and took the basic defaults for the menu in Share and didn't edit any of the menu text. When I get to the Output section, the Required/Available Disc Space is in red and has the following information:
5.08GB/4.38GB
(5.45GB)/(4.71GB)
Where did I get the 2.23GB in video growth? I saw a post from Jan 2012 that mentioned data rates for a 60 min. and 120 min. DVD. My Properties shows a data rate of Variable bit rate (Max 6124kbps). Could this be a reason for the growth? If so, how do I change it? I'm a newbie, and there may be some settings I need to make that are causing the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

In the burning module, right click the Options icon that looks like a cogwheel down in the bottom left of screen. Is the box beside 'Do not convert compliant mpeg files' ticked? If not, then tick it. This should normally ensure that if your original mpeg-2 was DVD-compliant, then it will not be converted again using any other properties.

I suspect that what is happening in your case is that it is converting your mpeg-2 using the default DVD bitrate which is 8000 kbps. For an 86 minute video such as yours, this bitrate would produce a new file about the size of the one you appear to be getting.

Ken,
The Options or Project Settings has ticks in the following boxes: Do not convert compliant MPEG files, Treat MPEG audio as non-DVD compliant, and Auto repeat when disc playback ends.

You are correct on the 8000kbps. Video data rate is: Variable (Max 8000kbps)

I'm starting to think that there is something wrong with the MPEG2 file. Although this is the first video I've done that is over 60 minues, I've used other MPEG2 files without any problems.

Can you please right click the original file, either in the VS timeline or the VS library windows, and let us know what the Audio Properties are. If it is in fact using mpeg audio, then in the burning module it will be treating such audio as non-compliant, and having to convert it either to LPCM or Dolby. I suspect that it might have to convert the video as well, and thus would be using the default 8000 kbps.

Hi Gary

If you are indeed using a compliant DVD Video File to burn a DVD try this.

1 / Start a new project, nothing in the timeline.
2 / Share create Disc--opens the burner module--nothing in the timeline.
3 / top left Add video file---Browse the hard drive and add your video file.
4 / view the timeline size indicator should show the original size as correct
5 / Do not convert compliant MPEG files should be selected
6 / create the disc menu
7 / As a test from the last window choose to create a DVD Folder rather than disc, saves making a coaster
8 / Hit the burn button should show the progress as "Create menu"---if you see "Create Title" then the video is being rendered, not what you want.

Read my guide http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/guides/q ... e_mpeg.htm
http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/guides/q ... de_avi.htm
scroll down to burn a disc section.

Trevor,
Step 4 shows 2.95(3.17)GB as size. Step 5 is already set to Do not convert compliant MPEG files. I do steps 6 & 7. When I hit the burn button, under Total Progress it starts with Convert Menu then goes to Prepare Output Content. The Detailed Progress shows Menu Page(001/001), next is Video/Audio Multiplexing, and finally Finalizing VOB. It completes without any problems.

I've read the guide from MPEG capture to burn and will do more with it later today. I still don't know where the size increase comes from, but maybe I'll learn that when I go thru the guide with this video.

Hi

If you add the video to the timeline, then Share Create Disc you are literally adding a VSP to the burner module. The VSP is not a video file and therefore not a compliant video.
This would then be rendered/converted using the properties you see under the Properties Cogwheel.
Irrespective of the Do Not Convert Compliant Mpeg option.

When you hit "burn" the process will start with Convert Title, creating a temp Mpeg in the Create and Burn folders, the temp Mpeg is then used to burn the disc.
The size of this file depends on the settings under the cogwheel.

Trevor,
I followed your MPEG Capture to Burn guide and with a 8 second title added to the video the size when burning is 2.90(3.12)GB and rendering time was just under 10 minutes. Along with fixing the size issue the rendering time has greatly decreased. I've only burned two other videos that were 40-60 minutes in length, and the rendering time for them was between 50 and 60 minutes. I've created my own workflow instructions based on your guide. I use Import from Digital Media in the Capture Process, so I made a few changes in that process. Thanks again for your help.
