SMOOTING ENLARGED IMAGES EDGES???

Post by Brooke »

I have just started using the Paintshop Pro X4. In fact, I am still using the trial version and I want to use it so I can see if I want to buy it in a couple of weeks. However, I am not really very knowledgable about computers, computer language and all the technical stuff. So things have to be pretty obvious to me.

Just for practice, I have downloaded a photo of a cherry and a leaf. Not great art, but a nice clear photograph. Of course I want it to be larger than the thumbnail image, so I have blown it up to 6"x6" Now the edge of the cherry, the leaf and the stem are all jagged. I know that is because of the pixels - but I still want to know how to get around it and smooth the edges when I enlarge something.
My husband says it is a function of "raster"??? So what the heck is that? Can or will someone just tell me in simple language how to smooth edges of an enlarged photo using Paintshop Pro? My husband's words just fall out of the hole in the bottom of my brain!!

If it is a photo then what you have downloaded is the limit of the detail you can get.
Any resizing to a larger image does not add any extra detail. What you have done is like looking at a printed colour magazine picture with a magnifying glass and expecting to see a smooth coloured area that you see from a distance. Instead you see that any color is made of a mixture of dote of differnt colours to give the appearance of a general colour from a distance.

In your case with a photo you are better to start from a larger pictire and size down to what you want.

You can only enlarge a tiny bit, and as hartpaul said, it will NOT add details so it will not fill in. If you start with a large image and you want to enlarge it, you can try with Image > Resize and choose 105%, and repeat. But you can only do that a few time before you start seeing jagged edges. If you start with a thumbnail image, you will never get something as big as 6x6.

As stated previously, your best bet is to start with a larger image but this might not be possible. You might try a stair step resizer script for your resize operation(see attached example from Suz Shook).

Tools that might work to smooth the edges include:
Adjust>Add/Remove Noise>Edge Preserving Smooth
Adjust>Digital Noise Removal
Adjust>Softness>Soft Focus

Adjust>Add/Remove Noise>JPEG Artifact Removal or Moire Pattern Removal might help as well.

Please note that all of the above operations will soften the image (possible creating a painted effect) so this might not be what you are looking to happen.

Your best bet is to post the image so people can take a look and offer suggestions rather than just generic answers.
