Transitions in Video Pro X-5
I have been using Video Studio X-3 for well over a year and have not enjoyed the experience - so I began a trial run of X-5. I loaded one of my projects from X3 to X5 to see if it could easily burn a dvd - which is not easy for me to do in X3. It worked fine. I then loaded another project to X5 to see about editing and I was quickly shocked to find that a default transition is always added between overlapping clips whether the Automatically add transition effect is enabled or not. What an idiotic system!!!! If I wanted a transition, I could create one and I certainly did not want them tossed throughout my project. I contacted Corel support who told me that the automatic transition is part of the X5 experience. So I am asking if there is any clever way around this idiocy.
And secondly, the projects that I opened in X5 now no longer open in X3. Any answer why and will the projects again be usuable by X3 when I end my X5 trial.
Thank you.

Re: Transitions in Video Pro X-5
That's very peculiar. In my own X5, when I don't tick the 'Automatically insert transitions' box in Preferences > Edit, transitions are definitely NOT inserted. So I am not sure why that is happening in your case.
As for the X3 projects no longer opening in X3 after they have been opened in X5, that has always been the case with preceding versions as well. Projects are forward, but not backward, compatible. If you save them again in X5, they are saved in X5 format and cannot be opened in previous versions. You can, however, when saving them in X5, use the 'Save As' command. After assigning a name, or keeping the existing one, look at the next box down. It says 'Save As Type'. Click on the downward facing arrow, and you will see that you can choose to save them either as X5, X4 or X3 project files. Choose the latter and they should reopen in X3.

Thanks for the save as tip.
I don't understand the automatic insertion of transitions but it is stated as such in the Help section. Do you have Pro or Ultimate and might there be a difference?

I have no "default transitions" added between any clips but then I never overlap clips on the same track. Obviously if you overlap clips on the same track then you have to have some sort of "transition". So there is no clever way around "this idiocy".
In many software packages forward and/or backward compatibility is not guaranteed. I have found that it is best to finish a project in the program version it was started.

Re: Transitions in Video Pro X-5
I'm a user of X3, X4 and X5 Ultimate versions os the Video Studio.
What I have to say about transitions is that I found too deceptive that the original Corel transitions are the same for these 3 versions.
We always expect that a new version brings a lot of new resources... whatever be a software;
But that's not the case for Corel Video Studio.
The same I can say about the DVD Creation Gallery... the X5 Ultimate version is the same as of the X4 version
(with the extra menu packet).
For The Titles Styles, The X5 Ultimate come with less styles than for the X4 (after the download in the DO MORE section).
I had to import the missing styles from the X4 to X5.
This is something Corel could incorporate in new versions not leaving to the user to do it.
When the next version X6 come... I will think a lot before updating it... if no new resources are added to it.
A note for transitions lovers.... BURGER free transitions functions very well in X4 or X5...
it's only the case to search for them in Google.
You have to put the... burgerZ.vfx files in the Vfx_plug directory in you Corel X4 (X5) directory.

Re: Transitions in Video Pro X-5
truppenthal -- I have the Ultimate package of X5. However, the Video Studio program itself is identical to the ordinary version. It is the extras such as Boris and the proDad plug-ins that make it Ultimate...

Re: Transitions in Video Pro X-5
If you overlap clips in the timeline of X5 then a transition is automatically added - whether you have the automatic transition function enabled or not.
The answer is do not overlap clips in the timeline - if you are overlapping them to get a crossfade then butt the clips and put a crossfade transition across the join - that will automatically overlap the clips and provide a smooth transition.

Re: Transitions in Video Pro X-5
Transitions work well in the preview and in files created as MPEG-4 files (H.264- High), but in AVCHD files the sound will not make a fade over to the second clip. The sounds are not overlapped in the transition area like the video, the second clip's sound is thus delayed compared to the video.

Re: Transitions in Video Pro X-5
Sorry I did not understand you at first Brian. Now I tested tested and found that the file produced works when letting the crossfade move the second clip so it overlap the first. I worked the way I used to do for many years with Ulead Media Studio Pro, which obviously was not so good with VideoStudio, though it seams to work with some codecs.
Then next question, how do I adjust the length of the overlap zone after I applied the crossfade? That often has to be edited to get the best result.

Hi
Transition durations
From Preferences F6- edit tab - set the default transition duration. Affects new transitions.
from the timeline, double clicking the transition will select it, drag the yellow trim handles to re-size
from the timeline, double clicking the transition will select it, change the duration showing in the digital clock, (right of preview screen)
Double click a transition in the library and it will be applied to the first available position on the timeline top track.
