PSP X2 won't install
I have Paint Shop Pro X2, installed on Win7 Pro 64 bit. A couple of days ago I could not open it - either directly in Program Files (and the Start Menu) or from recent documents. So I decided to reinstall it (I have the boxed version). The uninstall hung on "Unregistering modules" for a couple of hours and wouldn't get any further. So I deleted the Corel folder from Program Files and from AppData, then scoured the registry for all mentions of Paint Shop Pro and removed them, followed by a registry inspection by CCleaner. Then I tried re-installing. This time it hung on "Registering modules", and this time I left it running overnight. The next day it still said it was "registering modules", and that there were two minutes to go. I have now followed this process three times, each time with the same result - zilch.
On another site, someone suggested installing the program in Safe Mode, but the MS installer won't run in Safe Mode.
The only clue I can come up with is that PSP X2 stopped working after I had installed Adobe Creative Suite 3, but I can't see why that would make any difference (?) I have MS Security Essentials running and reporting no problems. I have also run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot S&D - the former found nothing; Spybot found three trojans which it removed. Still couldn't install.
This is driving me nuts. I originally installed the program with no problems; then it stopped working; now it won't install. I'd be VERY grateful for a solution. Thanks.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
As far as I know PSP x2 is not compatible with Windows 7, you can visit http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index.jsp?pgid=800577 to know which corel products are compatible with Windows 7.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
I am running PSP8, X2, X3 and X4 all on a Toshiba laptop with windows 7 installed and updated,
One of the tbings you need to do is close down all firewalls and antivirus programs (close off internet for security) during installation.
All run well and I use them to compare effects in the different programs and also look at problems.

Thanks for replying. I have already tried closing down firewalls and antivirus, but it makes no difference. I also tried installing it to another (internal) drive, but still it just hangs at "Registering modules".

Re: PSP X2 won't install
As I said in my original post, I already had the program running (for several months) so it must be compatible. I am about to try running it in XP mode in Win7 Pro, to see whether that helps.Abiel Corel NA wrote:As far as I know PSP x2 is not compatible with Windows 7, you can visit http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index.jsp?pgid=800577 to know which corel products are compatible with Windows 7.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
Try going into the control panel, user accounts, create a new user account with admin permissions, then log out of any other account and onto the new account and try installing again. I suspect this helps with bad registry issues since the new account is a relatively clean slate. If this works you should be able to use the program on all other accounts and delete the new account if you so choose. Might work, might not, but a number of people had success doing this with X3.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
I bet I know EXACTLY what is causing this problem. Try this: uninstall your Catalyst video drivers and go back to using the generic Windows drivers.
I am having the same problem myself. Couldn't uninstall, reinstall, or repair PSP X2. I'm running a Sapphire HD 6950 video card. As soon as I install the AMD Catalyst drivers, PSP hangs and there's not a darn thing I can do about it.
Before I discovered a couple threads on this topic, I thought I might have a corrupt registry. Wound up reinstalling Windows. You can imagine my dismay when it started happening again. I happen to hone in on the cause when I started uninstalling Windows and driver updates until PSP worked again.
From what I have been able to determine, the problem starts with Catalyst Control Center driver 11.10. I am running 11.9 and PSP fires right up. Oh, and it almost certainly is the actual driver, because I unchecked every option in the CCC installation manager until all that was left was the driver. I can personally verify that this issue occurs with 12.6, and I've heard that it continues with 12.7 beta as well.
Hope that helps.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
Grateful thanks to both df and Monadian. I will try your advice - especially Monadian's, because I have Catalyst on my machine, and let you know how I get on. Thanks again - this is a great site.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
df, that is a great suggestion. Unfortunately, I tried that and it didn't work. Uninstalling the video drivers was the only thing that worked for me.
I would love to know what is at the core of this issue. I very much want to install the latest video drivers because I am also an avid gamer and use SolidWorks. Something changed between the AMD (ATI) 11.9 and 11.10 drivers that directly conflicts with the ability of PSP X2 and X3 to run, install, or write to the registry, but what? Knowing those facts, it shouldn't be that difficult for developers to pinpoint the issue.
My guess is Corel won't worry about it since I could purchase the latest version and be done with it. However, this bug makes me extremely hesitant (along with the fact that they have not developed a 64 bit version yet). And also, what other issues will I run into with PSP X4 when Windows 8 comes out? What other unforseen issues will we run into? Minor bugs are one thing, but when software will not run... well, that's a deal breaker in my book.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
Unfortunately I need the Catalyst driver and PSP worked before on the same Windows 7 with Nvidia 9500GT and Intel HD 4000 graphics.
It's a pitty that no one ever was able to pinpoint the real location of this problem - which part of Catalyst interferes with which part of PSP?!
So no more PSP on my system.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
First, I apologise for taking so long to get back, especially when people have really been trying to help me. Family problems.
Secondly, I have now solved my problem - I gave up on X2, bit the bullet and bought X4, which installed fine and, after a little adjustment, works fine for all my needs.
Sincere thanks to all who contributed.

Re: PSP X2 won't install
I had similar issues with the "Registering Modules" at the 24 second mark. Firewall disable did not resolve the issue. I couldn't rollback the driver since I hadn't it installed before, so I just downloaded the 11.9 Catalyst drivers and manually installed. After the drivers were installed. I had to reboot the system and restart the PSP X2 install. and it worked like a charm. Thanks guys.
