Bad quality of PDFprinting. Is it normal in PSP?

Post by cadudesun »

Hi,

I couldn't obtain a reasonable PDF file directly from PSPX4. I am printing from PSP by using the Adobe PDF printer.
I am needing to send a file to be printed in a print house and they ask for PDF format.
By inserting a PNG into an PowerPoint or Word and then generating he PDF file the output is quite better than from PSP.
Is it a PSP common behavior (bad PDF quality)? Is there any chance of obtaining a great PDF file using a PDF printer from PSP?

Thanks,
Cadu

I seldom use a paper printer, but do create pdf files from time to time to check virtual output. The resolution vs. paper size numbers involved do intrigue me. To cut to the chase, PrimoPDF "printer" may be one of the better freely downloadable solutions for creation of higher resolution (up to 4,000 dpi) pdf files.

I haven't kept up with the numbers game lately, but in 16 bit (32,768x32,768?) days, the following maximum canvas size was typically supported by these photo editors:
Ulead PhotoImpact: 32,000x32000 pixels
Adobe PS: 30.000 x 30,000 pixels
Corel PSP X4 10,000x10,000 pixels

The higher priced current Adobe PDF software can work in a 32 bit realm and be used for creating larger "large format" charts on suitable printers.

Commercial Printers may prefer to work from PDFs with a resolution of 2,400 dots/inch, so if you are trying to print from PSP X4, you will be limited to pictures around 4 inches x 4 inches at 2,400 dpi.

Disclaimer: These observations are based on my personal subjective understanding of the numbers involved from reading on the Internet.

I use following few steps:

1) export/save my work at required size and quality as JPEG.
2) with free program - JpegToPDF - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Office-too ... -PDF.shtml I create PDF of required parameters and page size. At this step JPEGs are directly embeded into PDF so NONE change of quality...
3) print in Acrobar Reader or similar soft.

The PrimoPdf "printer" application is available here. As with all products of this type, care must be used in downloading and installation, and it may be prudent to uninstall any unwanted features after the fact. I have found that I prefer using free Adobe Reader instead of available 3rd party readers at this time. It is my understanding that the PrimoPdf converter/printer product that I use may produce a high resolution pdf file suitable for commercial printing, but it may not. I have never had a book printed, but have read blogs by those who have done so, albeit in years past.

As to the other jpg to pdf converter product mentioned in the above post linked by Radim, I have no experience. I tried to download that converter for testing, but "accidentally" downloaded a pdf Reader product which took over my browser for a while instead. I think I have it uninstalled and cleaned out at this time, but will keep watching for other issues. As to trying again to download the product from the Softpedia link, I think I will pass for today. Good luck to all. :D
