X5 long films: one Project or better split it up?

Post by Scholli »

Ahoy from Hamburg Germany,
just a short question: when producing quiet long films (e.g. 2 hours), is it better to split it into e.g 3 individual projects, or is it better to work on it as one?
This, because I want to avoid the loss of data or already produced sequences, if one project is getting to big.

Thanx for an answer

Scholli ;)

That depends on what media you want to store them, if it can fit on just one DVD then you can keep and work on it as one project, if not then you may need to split your project. But if you plan to create a Bluray, your project will more or less fit on a single BD.

More on a dvd, less quality. 2 hours will see some degradation, maybe try making one and watching it to see if you are happy, if so, fine, if not, reopen the project, we'll call this project one.
Save as project first half. Remove the second half of the movie adn save project and make your dvd as normal.
Open up project one, save as project second half and remove first half, save and make your dvd.

I made some 2 hour DVD's without issues on one DVD. I break the DVD into sub videos and create mpg files for each. For example, Europe (main subject,) individual counties (sub videos.) I then use TMPGenc Authoring works to add chapters, if necessary, and then author. It works just fine.
