Unable to open AVI or FLV files?

Post by Jason Fairbanks »

Hello Corel Community.

I've encountered an issue regarding opening FLV. or AVI file extensions of any kind and was wondering if you'd be able to help me out?

AVI files - Whenever I try to open AVI files in Corel VideoStudio X5 Pro I get an error message saying "so and so file is not accessible" and then a second message replies: "These files cannot be added to the project. These files may of unknown file format, the computer does have enough memory, or the file is copyright protected."

Here's the information on said file.
VIDEO ASPECT

Video Size: 19.3 MB (19,844 KB / 20,320,402 b

File Length Correct
DivX Style "packed bitstream" AVI
OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
Interleave: 989 ms (24.7 v.frames), preload=1536
Audio frames: Split across interleaves
Video: 18.5 MB (95.93%)
Audio: 625 KB (3.15%)
AVI Overhead: 181 KB (0.92%)

CODEC: XVID

AUDIO ASPECT

Codec: 0x0055 MPEG-2 Layer 3
Info: 24000Hz 56 kb/s tot , Joint Stereo

I'm able to play .AVI file extensions with my GOM Player, but not with my Windows Media Player, if that helps.

FLV files - Whenever I try to open FLV. files in that same program I get the following message: "Unable to open file so and so. File format mismatch [16803.1:3]

Here's the information on said file.

VIDEO ASPECT

VIDEO SIZE: 61.6 MB (63,088 KB / 64,603,070 b

File Type: Flash Video (.FLV)
Mime Type: video/x-flv
Compatibility Warning:
Unknown Flash FLV format

My Computer's a Dell Dimension 3100 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2 installed. File System: NTSF, Free Space 4.84GB/145GB. I've had it for 6 years. I have the K-Lite Codec Pack installed on my computer (basic-2012 version). I'm assuming this may be a conflict of codecs causing the issue, but I don't want to speculate and hopefully somebody here is knowledgeable enough of this situation to help remedy this issue. I have Corel VideoStudio Pro X5. If there's any more information needed I'll be willing to provide it on request. Thanks in advance.

Alright. I managed to figure out the solution to my AVI issue. It turns out in my K-Lite Codec package had the XVID/DIVX settings disabled, so I had to enable it. Then, when I finally COULD open the .avi files in VS, all the thumbnails in the multi-trim option appeared black, so I had to go back and set my .AVI settings in K-lite to "Microsoft" as my "preferred source filter". Hopefully this helps anyone else in the future.

Unfortunately the same can't be said for my FLV files, which I still can't open. Upon checking my K-lite Codec settings I noticed there were no options for the .FLV ext, just .FLV1. and some other one, so I'm thinking it may just be a matter of downloading a .FLV codec that VS understands and is able to use.

I'm still open to suggestions on the matter.

This can be a problem with codecs, they are either missing or not updated. Here are some of the codecs that you may want to install.

Hi

Flash Video up to Video Studio X4

As far as I know you cannot open/edit FLV files using Video Studio X4 You cannot play Flash files within VS.

Yes you can create/render a flash file from your project, but thats all.

Video Studio X5 now uses Webm Files rather than FLV.
These can be opened / played and edited using X5.

SWF files, not sure but you may be able to edit these types, others on the forum may know?
