Hi Wendy

Is the Firewire terminal on the pc part of the Main/Mother board or is it a separate card. :?:

There is an article on the Microsoft site, I assume you have read this?

Download the Update for Windows XP (KB885222) package

Hi Lata,

I went to the article and tried to update, but after I ran the program it showed this on a pop-up window:

Setup has detected that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update.

Hi Wendy
We have to consider the fact that either the firewire card maybe faulty

Is the Firewire terminal on the pc part of the Main/Mother board or is it a separate card. :?:
First if you do not feel comfortable in working on the pc then ask for help. But installing a firewire card is quite straight forward.

If it’s a separate card try removing the card, then refit, just in case there is a bad connection.
If there is a spare slit then move the card to another pci slot

I found some info after searching google
http://www.directron.com/fireguide.html

Maybe worth a read anyway

The Firewire is part of the main/mother board. I will read that article...thank you :) I don't think it's faulty, but it sounds like I just need to get the right software installed/udpated for the host controller. Thanks again for the all the help and please have a Merry Christmas!

Hi Wendy

Go to the Main Boards manufacturers web site, they should provide drivers for your board, unless you have the disc?
Otherwise consider installing a new Firewire card provided you have a spare PCI slot.

Can you update your forum profile to include your computer specification.

And thank you very much , have a good Christmas yourself.

bowl3001999 wrote:Hi again, I am back :) I was so frustrated, I just put it all away. But, now, with Christmas-time being near, I really want to get the videos of my mother on a DVD. I read the last post by Lata, and the Canon camcorder does not show up under Image Devices. I have tried to connect via a 1394 plug, and also via the connector I talked about earlier (S-Video / Composite to USB Video Capture Cable w/ TWAIN and Mac® Support). So, am I doomed? If it's not recognizing it, is there anything I can do on my end? I really appreciate all the help I've gotten so far, believe it or not, it has been a big help for me! Thanks, Wendy
Wendy, just an afterthought after all this time, but have you tried installing the Canon Utilities for your ZR45 MC from the CD (or, a website download)? There may be files it installs on your system to support the FireWire, etc.? It's just another guess and probably too late, since you wanted the videos BEFORE Christmas. Let me know if you installed from the CD. Note: There are many features it installs which are superfluous (like most software today), but just maybe... it will install something that helps WINDOWS to recognize your camera properly.

Please, do not download everything they have available. Figure out first which one you need, otherwise you will screw up your system.

I hope I caught you in time!

What I had hoped you'd do is answer first to this forum if you had already installed the Canon drivers from the CD.

If you haven't done that yet, then find that SPECIFIC installation from their site, or else ask me to provide it for you. I "may" have it. You don't want to download all that crap that may have NOTHING to do with your camera, or your specific issue.

Sorry, but I just checked my local hard drive and my external 500GB hard drive and I did not save a copy of the Canon Utilities. It's something I normally would have done. But... I DO have the original CD, if you don't have it. I suppose I could always install it again, but if you have it already, that would be a great boon to this process of elimination to your problem. I truly identify with your difficulties! I too have suffered this mess, but it has been years ago. I'll continue helping you any way I can think of. Just be sure you let me know exaclty where you are in the process, so we are both on the "same page".

Old Friend, no, I haven't downloaded any yet. I'll be honest, I'm not sure which one(s) to download? I am on hold for Canon right now, maybe they can point me in the right direction for which one I need...

This is what I found on Canon's USA site regarding Firewire issues.

I searched under the Windows XP OS section, and here's their response on "Computers IEEE-1394 ports are not functioning correctly. Refer to computer mfgr."

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/c ... cure=false

So, it sounds like you need to contact the manufacturer of whichever Firewire card you are trying to get to work.

What's the BRAND and MODEL NUMBER of the FireWire card you are using? I may have missed it in one of your earlier posts. I will try to track that Model down on other websites for you.

I am coming into this late but I have just tried my Canon HV20 with VideoStudio x5 for the first time. It worked. When I had Pinnacle Studio, there was a problem with my new computer "seeing" the camera. This was sorted by installing the correct driver for the IEEE1394 port.

You may have done this but I suggest you go:- Control Panel > Hardware & Sound > Device manager. Half way down the list, you should see IEEE1394 Bus Host Controllers. Open this. On My PC it says 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (Legacy) This can be loaded or updated through the "Help and Support" section by looking for FireWire or IEEE1394.

Points which may help:- My camera was recognised directly by Windows putting up a panel offering to download the video etc. This showed that Windows recognised the camera connected through the Firewire port. If you don't see this or another sign of recognition, the computer is not seeing the camera. So the correct driver is the first stage.
If you cannot sort it out your self, do what I did, and get your Dealer to sort it out. We pay them good money for their support as well as the kit they supply. When my Canon did not work, I panicked and bought my second camera, a Panasonic HC-V700. This uses an SD card (plugs directly into my PC) or USB. Both cameras now work with VSx5 and I can use the Canon as an input for "Stop Motion"

Hope this gives some help.

Unfortunately FireWire seems to be to losing alternative to USB. If my Canon, which has the mechanical tape drive, fails on me, I would go for the SD card or USB route for my next camera.

Just read "Old Friend"s input from the Canon web site. Canon claim this is not their problem if the FireWire port and PC do not see the camera. I think they are correct. The FireWire must connect through to the computer and, assuming there is no hardware fault, the problem is with the driver. I would take the PC, camera and cable to the dealer and get them to sort it out.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Ok, I just got off the phone with Canon (after a 55 minute wait) and they said they the camera should just plug in with the firewire and that is it. He said that since the "DV IN" is flashing on my camcorder, there is something wrong with: 1. the firewire cable, 2. the computer connection, or 3. the camcorder. Wow, that narrows it down! It seems that I bought that firewire cable awhile back when I first started all this, but I'll have to look around to be sure. I'l be honest, I have no idea on the brand and model number...nothing I can find shows it on my computer. Maybe I could just shut it down and look on the inside (which I have no problem doing as long as I know what to look for). I can research that online first...

No way...so I found this article on firewire (while looking how to idenify it) and I saw this website that suggested plugging it into the back of the computer. And whala, it recognizes the camera! :D So, I'm now opening VideoStudio back up to see if I remember how to capture, and see if that works. If it does, at least I can get some of the tapes on a DVD (my other camcorder will probably be a whole other story).

If your computer recognises the camera then there is no problem with the driver. I had a problem in the early days with the FireWire cable, the Canon socket can be temperamental and the plug may need a firm push in. I solved my problem by replacing the cable.
Firewire is a connection protocol like USB so, provided the computer can see the connection, you should have no problem.
I would suggest you connect up the camera to the computer before you switch on. There were reports that connecting after switching on would blow certain Canon cameras and some HV20s were lost this way.
I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.
