Boris in X4 project not showing in X5

Post by AussieTX »

Just noticed that projects with Boris effects in X4 that are imported into X5 (as a VSP file) don't seem to carry over the effect.
I had some trouble last year when I started a project in X3 and then tried finishing it in X4. But this time I noticed the Boris effect is completely missing when I open the file in X5.
I spent quite some time getting the effect I wanted with Boris in X4 so I'll just have to create a video file and then pull that into the time line with X5.
The other thing I noticed was the VSP project from X4 is very jerky and not fluid at all in X5 even with the same preferences set in X5 as were in X4 (proxy enabled).
The jerky movement is mostly with the Motion Studio clip I created but again like I said I had a bad experience once before working on a project started in a previous VS version so I should have learned.
It's only less than 30 seconds of work so I'm not too concerned. I couldn't wait for Father's Day so I started it on X4. But now I can't wait to play with the new.
Got the lawn done, other chores completed and the kids are leaving alone me to play with my new toy for the rest of the day :D

Happy Fathers Day to all you other blokes out there!

Is your version of X5 the Ultimate one i.e. with Boris included. If not, then I would imagine that is why a project created in X4 did not carry over an effect not included in your version of X5. It was a warning we also issued at the time about the New Blue effects included in particular versions. If used in an earlier version then opened in a later version where that effect was not included, the effect would disappear from the project... or rather, not be able to be executed in the newer version.

Thanks Ken,
I feel like an idiot. I thought it was a version issue so I went into Boris on my X4 and the found the version was 5.3.6.1517.
I then opened X5 and there was not Boris even though I distinctly remember installing it.
When I select Boris from Disc 2 I get the option to Modify, Repair, or remove. Well the first time I select modify and that obviously did nothing as Boris was not even in the effects list.
So I tried again and selected Repair but still it does not appear if the FX page.
Obviously it is detecting the previous version from X4. Guess I'll try the uninstall and then re-install. This may loose it from X4 but I'm not too concerned.

Ken did you install X5 ultimate on the same machine running X4 Ultimate? Did you also get the same options?

Ok that worked. I selected the Uninstall option and then re-installed and now Boris is showing up in X5 as version 5.4.0.1525.
Now for the strange part.
I re-opened X4 thinking that Boris will be removed after the witnessed un-install but version 5.3.6.1517 is still there and working.
So I went into C:\Program Files (x86)\Boris FX, Inc and the screen shot below is what is listed.
So what the hell was un-installed? :?

In summary

If you are installing VSX5 Ultimate on the same drive as a working VSX4 Ultimate and you run into the 3 options for Boris make sure you select "Uninstall". Allow it to do it's thing and then go back and install.

I think it must have been some sort of licencing issue in that the Modify and Repair options NEVER during operation showed the window displaying the new serial number for the VSX5 installation.
I think this new serial number is only applied on a new installation so initially when the new Boris files were installed (5.4 version) it attempted to use the active/current serial number for Boris on VSX4 (5.3 version) which is not compatible so the effect would not show/initialize in VSX5.
Now with the uninstall and new install the new serial is backward compatible to the older version OR the un-install never removed the older serial number.
Again just speculating but it sounds good.
End result is I don't care cause it's now working on both versions. Boris 5.3.6.1517 on VSX4 and Boris 5.4.0.1525 on VSX5.
I just hope someone doesn't point me directly to a post already defining these steps.

Cheers

Pat
