It is useful for colour manipulation.
It doesn't affect what is applied.
It scales how the a and b channels appear in the curves window.
A small value of amplitude [say 5 or 10 ] means that the green curve (a) fills more of the screen so it can be manipulated easily by changing the curve
- at 150+ it is very narrow and difficult to control.

attached is small solarisation test piece based on a moonlit night shot (red curve as a 'M-W' shape, blue curve flat and lowered slightly and a little added contrast)
