PSP X4 very slow startup

Post by dagnabitboy »

Didn't find anything relevant, so apologies if this has been discussed before!! X4 takes about 70 seconds to start on an AMD dual core 2.8ghz with 4g of ram. By comparison PSP9 takes about 4 seconds. Once it's loaded image editing is very fast; 2 or 3 times faster than PSP9. But I cannot figure why it's so annoyingly slow to start. If I monitor the process with task monitor there is virtually nothing going on for about 65 of those seconds. Then all of a sudden my cpu activity jumps up to a high number and the program loads. I've upgraded X4 to the latest SP1 and SP2. I've tried re-installing several times. No luck. I've not configured any of the menus, and there is no work space setup either. Does anyone have an idea?? Thanks in advance!!

On my core 2 duo / 3ghz it *always* start up to 5 sec.

Try use a Sysinternals (http://www.filehippo.com/download_process_explorer/) or similar utils. Do a check of antivirus setup (if any, tray to switch it off and start PSP X4 to see). Do perform - antivir checking, disk defragmentation and check if you have enough free space. Do some cleanup with CCleaner (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)...

Thanks for the quick reply! I have tried installing/running with antivir turned off, same result. I'll run process explorer and give CCleaner a try. That's a good idea, thank you.

Have you tried updating your PSP X4? If not you can download all the updates at http://www.corel.com/corel/pages/index. ... id=3000009

Yes, I sure did. I guess you missed that, it was in my first post, but thanks anyway. Problem Solved! I wanted to let everyone know I found what the problem was (is). I use Firefox and it's setup as my default browser and apparently X4 doesn't handle it properly. When I switched IE to be my default everything works properly and much faster. First time load is 12 seconds, subsequent start up times are about 5 seconds. I think the program must have been checking for updates when started and just sat there waiting. I hope the folks at Corel can patch this little bug so others don't go bananas like I did!!

That didn't get mine to open in seconds. It took 3 minutes and 15 seconds but I'm not complaining. That's a lot better than the 10+ minutes it was before the latest update. Now if Corel had just made the rest of the adjustments the users have been complaining about since the beginning....

With all the variations in start up times I wonder if it is a PSPx4 issue or a computer issue. I have no issues with the 4-5 second start up of PSPx4 and yet I run the latest Firefox. I also have a i3 with 4gig. Everyone seems to have non related start up issues.

There must be another common link. Until that 'common' link is found it will be hard for the folks at Corel to fix what they can't find.

Now as I stated my PSPx4 starts in about 4-5 seconds. But sometimes, once started, it will have a wee snooze before it actually starts work. (load a file and then hit the zoom button. I can sometimes wait several seconds before PSPx4 responds). Is this the same issue?

I have an i7 with 8GB and although I was pretty sure that my long start time was related to the organizer pointing at a 209GB folder holding 687 thousand images, starting X4 with the organizer closed takes just as long.

After having a slow start of XP computer I determined that it was due to the type of external hard drive attached (2 TB) . I now start without any external drives turned on and slowly bring each one in. I do not allow PSP X4 to do any cataloging of files . I require it as an image editor and nothing else , not a manager, not a raw converter, not a contact printer etc.
I believe in specialist programs or a particular job the same as in other aspects. The more complex the program gets the more bogged down it gets and the more bugs are discovered. Any program that tries to be everything for everyone is doomed to failure amd mediocrity.
Even the photoshopists now use a number of diferent programs for different functions - Lightroom, Camera Raw and Photoshop.
