sound Out of sync

Post by Screwball »

I am attempting to transfer old VHF video to DVD. Using Hauppauge win Tv capture I achieve a surprisingly good quality sound and vision when capturing and all appears well. But! when I play back the VSP, after approx 2 seconds the sound starts going out of sync and progressively gets further and further out of sync, at worst approx 1 min separation. I hoped that after rendering this would correct itself, but no. I am using UVS 1. Any ideas?

Hi

First what version of Video Studio are you using, i don't recognise UVS1???????? Not that the version is an issue, unless it is UVS1

Try playing the captured video on one of your pc's media player, you may find the audio sync problem still shows, in which case its not a VS problem

The problem is most certainly the way you have captured the footage, or the way you have connected the VHS video and Audio cables.

Can you explain how you captured the footage, the cables used, maybe we can advise on alternative methods?

Then right click a clip in the timeline and select Properties, what are they?

Hi, Typo! UVS11. To repeat a bit, the actual recording is spot-on re sound and vision, all the way through, no dropped frames etc. It is only when I play back that the un-syc occurs. I can only assume that I have an incorrect setting somewhere? My input source is Pal_I is this correct? Audio source is line in (through sound card). I am using a R W Y cable to sound card (but not using the red, so mono only). I do not think there is a 'problem' with UVS, only my settings.

Hi

I asked--right click a clip in the timeline and select Properties, what are they?
This will tell us what capture properties you set.

Capture, its a while since I captured via a card, but think I used Pal_B
Can you then tell us exactly what capture settings you set under the Options Cogwheel?

Connecting only one audio lead will still capture as stereo, with one track empty?
Unless you specify mono in the capture properties.

When you say No Dropped Frames etc, I assume you are viewing this detail during capture.
and have from Preferences-Capture tab--ticked Show Dropped Frame Information, and that during capture this remains at zero?

Firstly, thankyou for your time and effort.

Your last question, yes to all.

File Format: Pal dvd

Video type: MPEG-2 Video Lower field first
Frame Rate 25.000
Data Rate: Variable bit rate (Max 8000)

Audio: LPCM Audio
Attributes: 48000 16 bit stereo

I have made many very successful videos and basically know what I'm doing - but I can't solve this one!

Hi

Thanks for the information

From an analogue source you would normally use Upper Field, however this should not affect the audio.
Have you tried using Digital Dolby as the audio format instead of LPCM.

No something is not correct, If you are capturing using 48khz and the analogue input is 41 khz which I would expect it to be maybe that will cause the shift in sync'

You use Hauppauge win Tv capture, does this come with software, a program to use to capture your video.?
Are there settings you can adjust for the Hauppauge that are separate to Video Studio?

When outputting your project to a new file (Share > Create Video File > DVD), make sure 'Smart Render' is unticked in the Options box. Does that make a difference to audio sync in the new file?

For the record, this happened to me with a file on my Vista puter. Not sure what happened, it took FOREVER to render, and the audio was not a separate track. It took hours, like maybe 6 hours? Very frustrating...

I am trying to figure out if I can redo it now by splitting the audio and offsetting. Dunno.

I think I have figured out the O-of-S problem. I am pretty sure it has to do with the original format of the audio you are bringing in compared to what you are putting out. If you bring in a variable rate, and change it to constant, or change the video to a rate that is diff from original but keep audio the same, it might have something to do with it, something like that. I spent WAY TOO LONG on Google looking for the answer. One person in a forum somewhere suggested that if it starts correctly and gradually gets to be out of sync by the end of a very LONG video (such was mine at 2 hours long), then chances are, it was the VBR versus CBR and to convert the audio to the original rate or something. To be honest, I could never figure it out. I really wanted to edit the DV-1 file first (adding desnow filter--maybe culprit, some check box about "frame offset"), but I ended up taking suggestions from the board and rendering it as ANYTHING offered in the Share drop down before making any changes. But my files got all mixed up and I ended up using the Crop filter on an Mpeg rather than an AVI. I lost some quality, but it was more important that the lips be in sync because it was a theatrical production. The show is 3 disks long, and I have wasted 6 DVD's so far. I finally got the first DVD burned correctly, then I started losing my hair and got concerned that I should maybe take a shower.

OH and BTW, it might have been my computer did not like Dolby Digital, so if you are trying to render with DD, go back to LPCM. I think that might have fixed my problem. Not sure though, cuz I was doing a lot of experimenting to get it to work.
