VS X5 DVD burn problem to 8.5 GB DVD
Hi: I am trying to burn a 1 hr 11 min HD file to a 8.5 GB DVD. My burner is compatible with dual level DVDs for that size DVD. I am using VS X5 "share" to DVD.
My camera is HD Canon Vixia HFS20.
Problem is I am getting "unspecified error" at the time when I think the burn should be complete.
I used burn speed 8x to burn the following:
Rendered the file to WMV 720p - got error
Rendered file to MPEG-4 HD - got error
Rendered file to MPG - VS X5 froze
On the video timeline I have inserted two jpg photos captured during play on the camera itself and downloaded to my computer.
I am also using a small MP3 audio file I "shared" to create an audio file.
I don't want to give up due to I like the VS X5 play menu and label making features.
I have not had this problem with VS X5 since I got it with 4.7 GB DVDs and smaller size movie files.
Thanks for any help. This is the first act of an opera with cast members waiting for the DVD.

Hi: I'm adding this jpg on to my thread, wondering if the "about" for my drive shown here, does it indicate Corel isn't supporting my dual layer drive?
Thanks for any help.

I am not quite sure what you are trying to create. Is it a video DVD (that you can play on stand-alone DVD players) or just a data DVD? If you are trying to create standard video then there is no point in rendering to anything HD since it has to be mpeg, 720x490.cdoughertycd wrote:Hi: I am trying to burn a 1 hr 11 min HD file to a 8.5 GB DVD. In what format is the video from your camera? Have tried first "burning" to an iso image file or a Video_TS folder set? This will show whether the problem is with the rendering only or with the actual burning.

Re: VS X5 DVD burn problem to 8.5 GB DVD
This is a video movie to play on stand along DVD players or on a computer, not a data disc. I did video for an opera.
For your statement:
"In what format is the video from your camera? Have tried first "burning" to an iso image file or a Video_TS folder set? This will show whether the problem is with the rendering only or with the actual burning."
Sorry I'm not good with terminology:
Where would I find the format for the video from the camera, it's a Canon Vixia HD HFS20.
Sorry don't know what first burning to iso image file or video_TX folder set, unless what I did in the list above is one of those. All I know is I used the raw footage from the camera in the VS X5 project, and rendered it to various movie files. From there I opened up a new VS X5 project and used that for the DVD burn. I feel more comfortable doing it that way.
Can you tell me how to answer your statements above?
Thanks so much for your help,
I can make jpg print screens of anything you need that will help you see what I'm doing.

Here's a print screen of my burner drive properties, so it looks like it is a DL drive able to burn to DVD+R DL ok (8.5 GB).

Re: VS X5 DVD burn problem to 8.5 GB DVD
As Canuck has already said, if you are planning to burn a video DVD, then you need to finish your editing, then select Share > Create Video File > and then select a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 template. And if indeed the project is only 1 hour 11 minutes long, then two things would flow from that.
First, I would go to Share > Create Video File > Custom. A dialogue box will appear with the Project Properties in it,asking you to enter a file name. Think of one you will remember. Then click the Options button on that dialogue box. Another tabbed box will appear. Select the Compression tab. Then down in the Audio section, change the default LPCM to Dolby. Then click OK to close that box, and Save to close the first dialogue box. The conversion should now begin, and with a 71 minute project such as yours, you should end up with a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 which should be under 4.3 GB in size. To be absolutely sure, though, on that same compression tab, you could also change the video bitrate to 7500 from the default 8000. Then your mpeg-2 should definitely be under 4.3 GB.
Second, with a DVD-compatible mpeg-2 which is less than 4.3 GB, you could burn it to a single layer DVD, and not worry about a dual layer disc. Video Studio IMHO has always had a bit of trouble with dual layer DVDs, though the situation has improved with recent versions.
As a footnote, I also suggest you convert the mp3 file to more standard .wav using some audio conversion/editing program like the free Audacity. Video Studio has always had a problem with some mp3 files, particularly those produced with the LameMP3 codec. So better to be safe with a standard .wav.

Ken, your instructions were perfect. Thanks so so much! I was able to burn my first disc of Act I of The Magic Flute (Mozart), big job videoing it on Sunday (3 hours) and then trying to figure out the 8.5 GB burn problem.
(3 happy faces).

Glad it worked!!
Now you can take the Zauber out of Zauberflöte and apply it to video!!

You have the Zauber way down there. Due to time and distance constraints all I can do is pack on a couple more happy faces and say once again, thanks so much, my project is alive again.
