Render from a PAL source for an NTSC input

Post by johnwoofan »

I'm from the UK but spend my summers in the USA doing Slideshow work. Normally I'd just render a project at home and give people a dvd but I find when I render a dvd it won't play in USA dvd players (maybe just the ones I tried) over there. It will play in computers....I've changed the project settings to NTSC and rendered my pal footage to an "NTSC" format from videostudio and I'll be testing it over in America. This "NTSC" disc plays in my Blu-Ray Player no problem and seems to not even change my film (thought there would be a difference with the 30fps). Maybe the discs I'm using? Although I bought disc from Walmart last year....

Is it the actual content on the disc or the setting you choose pre disc render that are relavant when you're trying to get a rewritable play in another country!?
On a side note, anyone know if UK Laptop can conect to USA projectors!? Had problems with my Dell XPS last summer but didn't research much....I tried HDMI - DVI and VGA.

Any help would be great....

If you created a NTSC DVD then it should play on all USA DVD players. Many US DVD players will not play PAL but I believe all BlueRay players in the US will play NTSC and PAL.

Ahhhh, ok. So the fact my NTSC DVD hasn't altered the actual original PAL video (good thing) it's just changed the type of disc so that USA players will recognise it!? Would that be right?
Obviously the proof will be in the testing when I leave next week. Just wanted to get a head start.

That would depend on how you created the NTSC DVD. I don't know what "altered the actual original PAL video" means in this case.

Well is there a way of taking a file I rendered in PAL (25fps) and rendering it onto a NTSC disc?

Hi John

when you convert Pal to Ntsc you effectively add 5 frames per second, this may show as a slight blip when playing the file.
Pal uses 25 fps and NTSC 29fps

You may be best converting the project rather than the Pal Mpeg2 file, really depends on the projects content. If it contains a lot of images then convert the project.
---------------------------------------

Knowing the properties of your Pal video files would help in recommending the new settings

OK

With the project open, either the original or one containing the single Pal file.

Save As giving it a new name, add NTSC to the name.

Edit the project properties to NTSC
Alt+Enter opens the Project Properties
Edit file Format to Mpeg files
Set Compression tab to use NTSC DVD
General tab--frame size will be 720 x 480

Set all others to match the properties of the Pal video
Close all windows, then File Save to re-save the details.

Share Create video file-Same as Project Settings will create a new Ntsc video file.

To burn the DVD start a new project, the project properties should match the NTSC video files properties
Share Create Disc--Add video File--adding the Ntsc.

Read my Quick Guide as reference
http://lata.me.uk/video_studio/guides/q ... e_mpeg.htm

----------------------------
Note that after hitting the burn button the process should start with Convert Menu.
