Thanks for the update on the update.

I set a System Restore Point.
I downloaded and installed Service Pack 2.
Loaded the last saved Workspace.
Just about everything disappeared. No (highly customized) Toolbars, no Layers Palette, almost nothing (it did open in Edit) just File/Edit/View etc.

I closed everything and rolled the system back to before installing SP2.
No thanks, I don't need this hassle. I can work with X4 the way it is. Some irritations, but nothing as unpleasant as to have to re-do the whole thing all over again.

:( I didn't bother to customize X4, had too many resets and crashes, actually don't even use it any more. I had high hopes for this latest fix, guess it will be another disappointment.

I have installed the SP, and am happy with it so far. But then again, I had not made too many modifications, so getting back to where I was, was not too hard. My pre-existing workspace, however, had disappeared in the update.

But I am being slightly (so far) annoyed by the fact that each time I now open X4 and then close it, I get a splash screen saying the update is ready to install. At first I just dismissed it, asking for the promised reminder. but then I decided to let it go ahead and (re)install SP2. Only when the installation page opens, it says no update is required, and aborts. And you guessed it -- the next time I close X4, I get the update msg again!

Luckily, I also created a restore point before the upgrade, and right now am thinking of reverting to where I was before the update since I was also quite happy with it then...

EDIT: Solved -- a simple reboot appears to get rid of the update screen.

So can anyone tell me what the changes from SP1 to SP2 are. Or rather why should I install SP2?

Thanks

If you go to that link that Radim provided above, there is a brief description of what has been done. But there is also a link to a more detailed set of Release Notes which you might want to read.

Update went fine for me...I lost my customized workspace, but I had saved it, so loading it again was easy. Everything else seems fine, so far.

I've read the release notes and I'm not that concerned with any of the changes between SP1 and SP2. However I have read on another forum that other 'bugs' and 'issues' have also been addressed. Such as 16bit frames. Anyone got any more info on what else may have been 'fixed'? I'm looking for fixes to 16bit issues with some tools.

Due to internet issues I can't download at the moment otherwise I would be testing this myself.

Thanks.

DaveQ -- I had also previously saved my customised workspace. But as I said above, it appears to have disappeared in the update... But never mind. As I also said, it was not a difficult one to replicate...

I also backed mine up. However, I was fortunate, even the original did not disappear (so I was luckier than Ken.) Not sure what the bug fixes were, but I'll take them. PSPX4 has always worked well for me. I do get a splash screen but it says that my feedback is important and wants me to take a survey. I did several times so I guess my opinion counts loads :D

I downloaded SP2. And did a screen capture of my PSP workspace (I only work in Edit tab) and saved that since it mentioned during install you might lose some settings (hint... read what you are doing and you'll know this). I've learned from experience that in order to remember what all icons I have set on my toolbar to simply screencap and save. Pretty simpy since it IS a graphics program. ;-)

1) It DOES seem to take care of the HUGE issue when using the crop tool. Now you can keep the crop tool selected and go back and forth between various open images withOUT it defaulting to "tabbed" mode - can't stand that - especially when working where I want to see different images at the same time.

2) STILL has the 10,000 pixel limitation on image size. So large panoramas are still limited, and will still have to revert to PSP-X2 to work with the panos larger than 10,000 pixels on the long side.

3) Still seems to not be fully Windows7 64-bit compliant... I have 6gb RAM installed and all it shows is 4gb in it's "help/about/system-info" screen with 3.28 usable. Running Win7-64-Ult, Intel i7-920 CPU with 6gb ram.

Those are the main things I had issues with and one was solved. Maybe SP3...

I didn't have the constant nag screen that Ken Berry had, but then again, I had changed the program options not to nag me with these messages by unchecking these options:
Help > Corel Guide... > (Gears)
·Keep me informed with the latest product related messages
·Automatically download free product updates and notify me before installing

Luckily, I had saved my customized workspace from SP1 before installing SP2:
File > Workspace > Save...
but this won't work if updating directly to SP2 (which is possible),
"This service pack can be applied to software that is not already updated to SP1 (14.1.0.5)" --Corel.com
due to the program changes from the original release to SP1/SP2.

I was annoyed that this Service Pack hijacked some file types (just like the original installation and the SP1 installation), but I was able to restore them with a command script (fileassoc.bat) that I use frequently with many software installations that hijack file types without asking, using the relatively undocumented system command assoc:

Code: Select all

PROMPT $G
CLS
@ECHO Restore Default File Associations for Windows XP.
@ECHO This BAT file restores the factory default associations for XP.
@ECHO It does not restore associations created by 3rd party applications.
@ECHO (Note: Microsoft Office filetypes DOC and RTF have been commented out.)
@ECHO.
@ECHO Use with caution. This restores ALL file types to the Defaults.
@PAUSE

I was also annoyed that installation of SP2 (and previous installations of the original product and SP1) restored Corel's context menu item for images, but this is a minor annoyance, since some may find it useful:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Corel PaintShop Pro X4]
@="{CA34A346-C652-4F33-8CFF-FD6A91D9D64A}"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Corel PaintShop Pro X4]
@="{CA34A346-C652-4F33-8CFF-FD6A91D9D64A}"

Deleting these registry keys rectified this annoyance.

Also, as with the original installation and with the SP1 installation, the Browse with Corel PaintShop Pro X4 context menu item was set for drives and folders:

Code: Select all

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\Browse with Corel PaintShop Pro X4\command]
@="\"c:\\Program Files\\Corel\\Corel PaintShop Pro X4\\Corel PaintShop Pro.exe\" \"%L\""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\Browse with Corel PaintShop Pro X4\command]
@="\"c:\\Program Files\\Corel\\Corel PaintShop Pro X4\\Corel PaintShop Pro.exe\" \"%L\""

This relatively useless feature can also be rectified by removing the associated registry keys.

Other than these minor annoyances, I did not have any trouble with the SP2 installation...
