Video picture narrows during transition

Post by markpritch »

Hi guys
Quite a while since I last needed your help but hope you can come to my rescue again. I recall having this problem in the past and apologise for not recalling the solution. I've made several dvds over the past 12 months or so and this has not occured but on my latest venture I am getting a nano-second of the video picture narrowing from wide screen during each transition. It then almost immediately goes back to wide screen, causing something like a sideways blink.
I am mainly using crossfades with the occasional circle wipes, clocks and spins.
This does not occur, however, when using crossfade on the still images, which I pan and zoom, and include at the end of the video.

I am using a JVC Everio Camcorder with a Medion Akoya E600 D (MD8328) PC with Windows Vista 32bit.

I have tried several methods of creating the video file: Same as Project Settings, Same as first Video Clip, MPeg Optimiser and even custom, all with Upper Field First and all with the same result.
Any ideas please?

Hi again
I think I may have solved the problem. If I create the video using Lower Field First (even though all my .MOD files are UFF) then my video does not narrow on each transition but it causes me another problem.
When I get to between 50 and 60 pct completion my PC shuts down! It manages to store the amount of video already processed up to that point so I am able to see the result but I am not able to get beyond around 60pct completion. I tried this 5 times last evening and the PC shut down on every occasion. Before turnng in I closed the VS Pro X2 programme and was able to run my PC continuously until writing this post.
Have you come across this before?
I will now try to uninstall and reinstall the programme to see what happens but will not have time today.
Cheers
Mark

Hi Trevor
Was out all day yesterday but I have now managed to create the video on my wife's laptop, an Acer. Did not seem to have an issue with the programme at all.
Worked first time.
I will now try an uninstall and reinstall and do it again on my pc.
Wasn't a disc space error as I have not reached that stage. This is the first of 3 short videos that I am going to join together before downloading to disc. This first video only runs for 15 minutes.
Will try again after reinstall and let you know, meanwhile I will add details to my profile.
Many thanks
Mark

Sorry Trevor
Just realised you meant disc space on my PC. No again. I keep these programmes on a Sata external drive and have in excess of 1TB of space, the Corel programme is on my C drive but there I have nearly 150Gb of free space.
Thanks again

Hi Mark

Have you been able to create a video file in the past.?

You said that the render failed at 60 % but saved the file, how large is the file?
Although you say it runs for 15 minutes so should be small Gb

Again thinking file size and disc size, if it were 4 Gb I would be looking at Fat 32 formatted hard drives.

Seems very strange that the pc shuts down.

-------------------------

The program is installed on the C drive, that is normal.
Have you tried rendering the video to the C Drive. I assume you are saving to the Sata external drive.

I wont be able to reply for a few days, heading towards Northumberland tomorrow for a few days.
Hopefully someone will understand what is happening?

Transition 'blips' were a relatively common problem in VS X2, affecting some users but not all. However, they mainly occurred with AVCHD video. I don't think there was ever a universal solution to that problem in X2. Some people also complained it happened withX3, but the problems seems to have disappeared in X4 and X5. So you might want to download the trial version of the latter and see if the problem occurs again...

Certainly there is no point in changing the field order from Upper Field First to Lower since that will simply add flickering and other artifacts to the resulting video.

The shutting down of your computer sounds really strange, though. Can't recall anyone else ever complaining of that, even with the worst of the transition blips. Is it a 'clean' shutdown i.e. when you restart, do you get a BIOS message saying the computer was not closed properly, and asking if you want to reboot in safe mode? Or does it just boot up normally?

Hi Ken
Lovely to hear from you, hope you are keeping well.
I've had a lot of trouble attempting to post my reply so this is merely a test to see whether I can get back to the Forum.

Ok that worked, my previous attempts have included a document and that may have been the problem but will try again now.
Thanks re the idea of downloading X5. It took me 4 attempts because the first 3 were blocked by the Microsoft Smart Screen Filter, suggesting the Coral home page might be a malicious site.
See attached doc, if I can manage to send. After 3 unsuccessful attempts at trying to override the filter I had a closer look (I've never seen this before) and found I could turn it off.
Once downloaded I tried to run the programme but was stopped with another error message. See doc again.
If you could advise what I need to do to get X5 running I would be most appreciative.

To Iata, yes I've made loads of mpegs and dvds. I didn't have this problem with VS 8, 9 or 10 and have a vague recollection now that I just reversed the UFF to LFF although I quite accept Ken's comments so would really like to try again with X5 before putting everybody to more trouble.
Many thanks guys
Mark

Well I've tried to send this with an attached document but it just won't go. The first part is a screenshot of my download page with "VSX5 _Pro_TB....Exe" against which the message reads 'This Programme is not commonly downloaded and could harm your computer' The choices buttons are 'Delete' and 'Actions' under actions I selected 'download anyway' but the programme aborted 3 times in a row.

Once I got the thing downloaded and started to run I got another error message that says:

Error 1935. An error occured during the instalation of assembly. 'Microsoft.VC80.MFCLOC,type="win32", version="8.0.50727.42",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",processorArchtecture="x86"'. Please refer to Help and Support for more information.

if you can interpret this into plain English for me I would be much obliged.
It's now 10.30pm and I am off to bed.

Cheers

You may want to check this page from Microsoft. http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... uring-the/

The poster is installing a different program but the error message that he/she is getting is similar to the one that you are getting.

Hi Abiel
Thanks for the thought. I've been in touch with the Corel techies and today they sent me a link to an internet download manager which I successfully used to download and run the programme.
I've just finished trying to convert my 15 minute video to Mpeg using the Mpeg Optimizer and on 2 occasions it has failed after just 12pct due to an 'unspecified error' so I am waiting to send them the dump file for analysis. I'll get their in the end!!

Hi again to Ken
Thought I would let you know that I have now downloaded VS X5 and although I failed to complete the creation of an mpeg of my 15 minute video, see previous message, ( I have now sent the Dump File to the techs for their examination) I have just about got a short amount of video footage taken on my Canon elph 300hs camera today. These are .mov and edited down they amount to about 5 minutes.
Using X5 with UFF the narrowing effect on transition has gone but it took me 5 attempts to create the video with my PC shutting down in each case. As a test I have had it up and running continously for the last two days without it shutting down at all but when I try to create an Mpeg on either X2 or X5 it shuts down very quickly and actually shut down on 3 of those occasions today while I was still editing the video clips on X5.
I've had this PC for 18 months now and made several DVDs last year without, as far as I can recall, having any problems. It certainly never shut down while using VS but there seems to be some conflict now between the PC and the VS programmes, do you think I may have some kind of bug?
Maybe I should have the PC checked out while it's still under warranty, would you agree?

I think you have answered my initial query in that you mentioned the narrowing effect during transition was an inherent problem with X2 and it certainly seems to have been corrected in X5 but I think I now have an overall greater problem with the reliability of the PC.
Thanks for your help, really appreciate.
Cheers

Hi Mark

I have had a few days away in Northumberland, just read your previous posts, still no idea what is happening.

All the problems you describe seem to point to an issue with the pc and not the programs.
so if it is still under warranty i would have it checked out.
Yes i agree you may have a bug????

I assume you have scanned the pc using the various tools available, Windows Defender, Virus Checkers etc.

If that does not find anything I think I would re-install the operating system, a bit drastic but I dont know what else to suggest?

Hi Trevor
Hope you made the best of the weather, seems we're in for a wet weekend.
Yes, I installed X5 (eventually) and my pc shut down a couple of times while using the new version and then, to cap it, when I eventually managed a small video (5mins) the programme stopped after converting at 12pct. It did this twice on my PC and again, at the same point, on my wife's laptop. So I must assume there is still a problem with the download trial version of X5.
I've sent both Dump Files to the Corel Techies and am awaiting result.
I will contact Medion support next week regarding the shutting down issue.
Funny, when I don't run these programmes I can run my PC day and night for days without any interruption.
Thanks for thoughts, have a great w/e.
Cheers

Hi Mark

Yep you were correct regarding the weather, ten pin bowling today, that will keep us dry........

I still cannot believe that the PC just shuts down without warning, most incredible

Have you tried manually updating Direct X, this has cured some issues with earlier versions, yes i realise that Auto Updates should cover this, but the manual approach has worked.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=8109

Download file (directx_Jun2010_redist.exe)
Extract to new folder on desktop
Run DXSETUP.exe
----------------------------
Adobe Acrotbat Reader update did cause my X2 (i think it was) to close without warning, so there are some strange things that happen.
