I can for see a much bigger problem on the horizon , when, I get a new PC with Windows 10. I assume the firewire and my mini DV tape Sony HandyCam will be be sitting on a shelf somewhere, collecting dust, or, go in the garbage, which, falls on Tuesdays
I had exactly the same problem.
I got a FireWire card added to my new PC and with the 1394(Legacy) driver could download from my Canon HV20 DV tape based camera. But then I upgraded to Panasonic with SD cards and the 1394 card has become redundant.
The SD card based cameras are much simpler to use because every shot becomes a file in its own right. There is no separating the continuous video into shots using the timecode changes. You can simply download the video files into VS and edit directly. But keep the Sony in case you need to download tapes in the future.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure.

Thank you for your reply. You are quite correct. I didn't think any farther then the demise of my Sony Handy Cam. I have an elderly Kodak Z740 SLR with an SD card and an elderly Canon Power Shot S3 pre-SLR with an SD card. Totally focused on the
Handy Cam. i'll hold off on the garbage. It happens every week, year in year out, so, there's time.
