Hi Carroll
-Frames Dropped: 93-
I guess we have found at least one culprit, there should be no dropped frames.
Not sure what to suggest………….
When you capture are you saving to your hard drive or an external device?
Your firewire terminal, is there more than one, if so can you try capturing using another port.
Also if you have another cable use that.
You mentioned that X2 worked ok in the past, were you aware of dropped frames when using X2.
I doubt if it is a VS problem rather your PC’s capacity to do the job, having said that DV –Avi is probably the easiest to capture, or should be.
When you capture do you use Split by Scene, if not try using that.
Please try Win DV to capture
http://windv.mourek.cz/
The dropped frames shows in the lower panel whilst capturing.
You will have to play the video using the cameras controls.
Do you get any dropped frames.

When you capture are you saving to your hard drive or an external device? yes. It goes directly to My Documents/VSP/14.
Your firewire terminal, is there more than one, if so can you try capturing using another port.
Also if you have another cable use that. I only have one Firewire terminal and just 1 cable.
You mentioned that X2 worked ok in the past, were you aware of dropped frames when using X2. No I wasn't, mainly because, I just discovered what the icon meant the other day. It could very well be that VS2 worked good because my system could handle it and when I upgraded to VS4 it took more resources to run and I had eventually tripled the number of videos I had downloaded when I had VS2, filling up more space on my HD.
I doubt if it is a VS problem rather your PC’s capacity to do the job, having said that DV –Avi is probably the easiest to capture, or should be.
When you capture do you use Split by Scene, if not try using that. I haven't with VS4. VS2, 75% of the time.
Please try Win DV to capture
http://windv.mourek.cz/ I had downloaded Win DV a number of months ago and used it to re-download some of the bad videos with some success at eliminating 70% of the outright stuttering but still having a little blip of hesitation where the stuttering was located on the VS capture one. I have used Win DV a couple of days ago to again download a stuttering video. The download played almost as bad as the original VS4 capture did.
The dropped frames shows in the lower panel whilst capturing.
You will have to play the video using the cameras controls.
Do you get any dropped frames. Again didn't know I could do that. I read the manual several times but only concentrated on what I would have to do to download a video. When I upgraded I just brought all my VS2 habits to the VS4 and stayed, more or less, at the VS2 level. Again, this is probably just me but, I found the manuals somewhat hard to follow. They seem disjointed from the software. I've felt that way from the first time I used VS2. I know, blaming the tools, instead of the tool using it, is no excuse for not knowing my program.

Re: Stuttering video when reviewing clip or project
VS 12 is still there
While deleting a program today through Control Panel/Add and Remove Programs, I found Corel Video Studio 12 at 257 MB showing up in the list of programs. If that is VS2, it was supposed to be deleted by the installation of 4, I thought. But, it isn't in the C:Programs folder it's in C:My Documents folder. VS2 as did 4 created a folder in "My Documents" folder that the videos from the camera are downloaded to. And I do know for certain that VS2 was installed in the C:program folder because after using it for a while I had to uninstall it, as it wouldn't launch, and reinstall it and it went right back in C:programs as that's the default (I got the non-launch solution in another thread 1 1/2 +- yrs ago).
After 4 was installed VS 2 was gone because I had to go in C:programs and delete some folders left over from the uninstall process. I hesitate in asking why it would be in that folder in "My Documents" since computers only do what we tell them?
Also on the Add and Save Programs window when I click on VS -12 and VS 4 on the right side it says
Video Studio 12
Used: Frequently
Last used: 26/01/2011
Video studio Pro 4
Used: Frequently
Last used: 25/03/2012
Is that the install date? Is "Used Frequently" for VS 12 showing how much it was used and not referring to present day usage?
One thing after another it seems. Carroll

Re: Stuttering video when reviewing clip or project
A couple of thoughts... When you install a later version of VS, earlier versions are not automatically removed. Each version installs as a totally separate program.
However, I am unable to account for the fact that your X2 still shows in Add/Remove Programs, but not under C:\Program Files...
Mind you, when I read your penultimate post, I wondered to myself if you could still use X2 to capture via Firewire, since that apparently worked well before with few if any dropped frames. It would still capture in DV/AVI format, and thus you could then open and edit that video in X4...
In fact, many programs, including VS, install a 'working folder' automatically, and by default -- for VS and other programs -- it chooses My Documents as the place to install them. Heaven only knows why. For a video editing program, for instance, it would seem far more logical to install it in the My Videos main folder. But no...

I did a extensive search for VS 12.exe but, couldn't find it so, I clicked to remove it in the Add and Remove window and found it was just a ghost of VS 12 left there after uninstalling. Something I have never come across before.

Re: Stuttering video when reviewing clip or project
Hi Carroll
Are you intending to reinstall X2 (VS12)
The installation files should be in the C/Program Files Corel folder.
Generally installing Video Studio saves the files to the %temp% folder and are removed after installing, however X2 saved them to the Corel folder named as “VS Installation files”, I think. You should be able to install from there by double clicking Setup.exe.
Having said that, if you are having problems using Win DV then I don’t think using X2 will make much difference
A new cable and firewire card may be the next thing to try?

No I had not planned to and there is no VS 12 file in any of the locations. I do have the VS 12 disk though.lata wrote:Hi Carroll

I have used my neighbours newer Sony HandyCam at times and downloaded from it but it's been a while but, I don't believe it used a firewire cable. I think it was a USB cable. I will go check with her to make sure I haven't got it wrong.
Checked on it and hers uses a USB cable. I don't know if there is anyway a computer shop could test the cable or not but, I will attempt to find out tomorrow.

Re: Stuttering video when reviewing clip or project
Hi Carroll
USB, now we do not recommend capturing video via usb, it may not be fast enough and Firewire is recommended.
Note the word "Capturing" not copying files.
However can you try the USB capture.
Your camera should have a USB terminal, mine is marked with the USB icon similar to a three pronged folk.
Anyway capture is similar to using firewire except you will have the option to use DV and DVD format, choose DV.
If USB works without dropped frames then we can assume Firefire is the problem

Re: Stuttering video when reviewing clip or project
There be no USB jack on the camera Trevor. Just the "DV" and "A/V out" jacks. I tried getting my Firewire checked out today but, that was embarrassing. A Fire what? Some did actually remember them though. I have one more place to go but, I think I'll call first.lata wrote:Hi Carroll

Would there be a way to download to another Sony Handycam that has a hard drive then DL from that one?

Re: Stuttering video when reviewing clip or project
Still plodding along.
Can't afford a new system but I did get 4gB of ram and I was finally able to get a portable 1T hard drive. I was going to try this but, wondered if it would be worth the hassle. If I installed VS Pro 6 on the portable would that possibly take care of the stuttering since that is the only thing that would be installed on it other then the portable's software of course?
However, what I don't know is, will it make any difference since my C and E drives are still filled to 97% of their capacity?
Plus if I install "My Projects" and the other files in C/My Documents would it still slow VS6 down because it would have to store and retrieve projects that are installed on the now just about full C drive?

You will never be able to do any meaningful video work if you drive C: is 97% full. Until you clean up your discs everything else is wasted time and effort and money

Re: Stuttering video when reviewing clip or project
Cunuck is correct, depending on the NLE used, between 30 - 100 GB of free space is required.
I don't think you can install VSX6 on a portable drive, for one thing the transfer rate between your computer and your portable drive would be too slow, and VSX6 will install to your primary drive.VSX6 is very resource hungry, far more than the early versions of VS, therefore considerable "underhood" power is necessary. You have not stated your computer specs, but I would suspect that it is a very old and low powered for current NLE's available on the market today.

Hi Carrol
Apologies for not responding to your post in April, that seems to have fallen by the wayside.
Did you ever get a firewire terminal and 4 to 6 pin cable also known as “I-Link”
Do a google for IEEE 1394.
The cards are easy to install
Then transferring the video from a Mini DV camera should be ok?

I've been looking at systems and I believe the best ones, for power anyway, are geared towards Gamers. There is a business here where I can go in and build the system also, but, am somewhat timid in picking what I want in it. The 2 guys that have the shop are very knowledgeable about computers, repair and new and re-purposed ones.
The top brand names are pretty much out of reach for me too, so, it will have to be a clone type, I guess. A couple of my friends are trying to talk me into a Lap Top, but, I don't really like them (Lap Top that is) I like sitting at my desk looking at a 20" screen.
Anyway, more useless information then you wanted to know. I will get back to you regarding your post.

I just want to clarify the firewire thingy.
I've had a firewire cable for about 5 yrs which plugs into a slot on the front of my HP PC. The slot was there and live since I purchased my computer 12 yrs ago. Would replacing the card be of any benefit now?
I can for see a much bigger problem on the horizon , when, I get a new PC with Windows 10. I assume the firewire and my mini DV tape Sony HandyCam will be be sitting on a shelf somewhere, collecting dust, or, go in the garbage, which, falls on Tuesdays?
