VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in library
I have imported multiple photos in the VSP photo library. Some photos are fine. They can be added to the project with no problem. A couple of photos when I try to move them to the project or right click for properties, VSP locks up with an unspecified error and creates a dump file. Then the program shuts down.
I have deleted the photos from the 15.0 directory and am able to delete problem photos from the library.
Tried to import photos as a media file and it imports some photos ok and same photos lock up VSP x5.
The issue seems to be with certain photos but I have not been able to find anything different with working photos so far.

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
Are all the photos the same format (e.g. .jpg) or are the problem ones in a different format? If so, do you have any idea what? Can you right click on one in Computer/Windows Explorer and see what the Properties are? Where did they come from: a camera or did you download them or get them from someone else?

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
I have narrowed the crashes down to where the photos came from. Any photo taken from my old Droid will work fine. Any photo taken from my Droid X or my friends "Commando" phone will crash my VSP x5. I have tried to change picture size to no avail.

hello james2222,
I've sent you a private message, can you send me a sample pic and the dmp file that was created, so that I can forward this to our engineers.
Thanks,
Abiel

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
I am having exactly the same problem. It is only specific photos that seem to create the Problem. I have resized, cut, trimmed and done just about every thing possible and still X5 goes down and gives me a dmp file reference. System is fully up to date and I have installed the latest patch, including everything for Quick, DivX, Xvid. Really at wits end on this one. The program works brilliantly for videos and have now unfortunately uninstalled X2; but still would not really want to go back to that.
Hope somebody can help

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
Hi
Ken asked if the images were all jpegs, it would be nice if you could confirm this
Jpeg type images can use "Baseline" as the encoding type, these being the standard type.
"Progressive" encoding is used for the internet, allows the image to be in view before it has fully uploaded. Saves looking at a blank screen whilst the web page loads.
Some programs do not like progressive Jpeg types.
I am not saying this is the problem, but is worth viewing the properties.
If you do identify a progressive type try re-saving using an Image editor to use baseline

Hi
That’s good to know, but exactly the same as what?
I am assuming they are Jpeg types.??????
Right click a clip in the timeline and select properties, whats the details?
It may be best if you can make the images available for download, so we can view them on our pc's.
If we can edit then without problems then the issue is with your setup.

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
Hi
Thanks for the response, for what it is worth I have uploaded the offending photograph to my skydrive and can be found here
http://sdrv.ms/PVMjyG
Bethells Beach 4 is the troublesome one, 3 and 5 work fine.
Wouldlove to get it into the timeline and then perhaps I could answer your question, problem is that it does not get that far and the program crashes the moment I click open.
I hope you can get them because I seem to be just getting the complete run around on this one.
It could be my setup but somehow doubt that after having created well over 20 hours of slideshows with the previous versions and no problems at all and those were all taken by the same camera and the slide shows were created on the same laptop that I am now working on.

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
Hi
Well the image (Bethells Beach 4.JPG) also crashes my Video Studio X5, I have no idea why this is happening.
After saving the image using my image editor I was then able to insert to X5
Using Video Studio X4 I can open the problem image with no problems.
The properties viewed in VS X4 are identical to the other images with the exception of an attribute showing JFIF marker as No, however I have no idea what this means.
If other versions of VS had the same problem I would put it down to a corrupt image file, but there has to be some reason why it only affects X5?

Thanks for that. What Image editor are you using. I have nothing and really just use Picasa to deal with images although I do have an old old version of Ulead Photoimpact lying around somewhere.
My problem is that it is not just a single file. If that was the case I would happily bin it and move on, but is occurs on a number of images and it is something that I have never come across.

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
Hi
I actually used Adobe Photoshop, shame on me, I have Paint Shop Pro and Photo Impact, both would do the job.
I will e-mail you the converted image, then you can view its details in VS, but as I said they look the same as the good files.
You may be best to report this to Corel Support, I don’t like using the word bugs, but when you can replicate the problem then I guess “bug” is appropriate.
Be interesting if others had the same problem, my thoughts are yes they will?
I will keep looking at the files to see if I can identify any thing

I also get the crash in X5 with Photo 4 but not with X4.AWally wrote:Thanks for that. What Image editor are you using. I have nothing and really just use Picasa to deal with images although I do have an old old version of Ulead Photoimpact lying around somewhere.

I also have no problem using any of the photos in another video program I use (Roxio Creator 2012)
I looked at the photos that you uploaded with an EXIF reader and there are differences in the Tags.
For example Photo 3 & 5 show a "image description" tag while photo 4 (the problem photo) does not. Did you run the photos through some process: rename, etc and then save them again?

I also get a crash in X5 using the downloaded image - but can see no reason for it.
however I saved the image as a bitmap (.bmp) and it then inserts into X5 with no problem at all.

Re: VSP x5 Crashes when trying to access some photos in libr
Hi
I have used Photo Impact to view the files properties.
The good images show a tab similar to how canuck describes, called "IPTC/NAA Information"
You have given the good images a description I assume within the camera.
The bad image does not have the Tab as shown in the image below.
To be honest I do not think this is the cause of the problem but the only thing that is different.
As I mentioned earlier I can re-save the problem file as a jpeg, the new file works OK without the IPTC/NAA tab
