Cannot open Jpeg (read only files)

Post by alan »

My daughter in law who is Vietnamese took some photo's and downloaded the Jpeg files onto my pen drive.

When I transferred these files to my hard in the UK, I found that the photo's would not open. Looking at the

properties, it showed every Jpeg photo was in in "Read only format" and contained 0 bytes. The hole

folder contained 544 M bytes of photo's. I then deleted the shaded out part of the "Read only" file and

pressed OK, but this did not allow the file to be read.

I then tried to open the photo's in Paint Shop X4 and this was a success.

A few days later I tried to re access the Jpeg photo's and again, but I cannot open the Jpeg files with or

without X4.

(working with Widows Home Premium)

Any one any suggestions?

Are you using Win7? It has a problem with password protected jpeg's. If so try an older operating system and re-save with a different name.

Can you post one of the pictures some place so we can take a look at it?

Hi R Frydryck,

Many thanks for your reply.

I thought that I had posted a reply to this message, about an hour after I had sent the original message.

I did not apparently save the message. My apologies.

I did eventually manage to look at the photos in X4, they were in Jpeg format.

I then transferred them from Jpeg to Gif format.

The files are now permanently open and not stuck in "read only format."

Thanks again.

No prob Alan,

But Gif may have been a poor choice to convert a photograph to because of it's limitations and color pallet. To maintain the maximum detail and color space save as a PSP file format or TIFF.

I didn't realize this I will open the original file and convert to Tiff.

All 215 photo's have now been converted from Jpeg to Tiff.

Again many thanks for your help.
