Captured AVI run fast when viewing

Post by Tom Cader »

Not sure if this was covered in the past 5000 messages but I've run into a problem. My All in wonder capture card just stopped capturing. Nothing I could do including a system rebuild would not let the driver load. I'm guessing the card went south. I put in an ELSA capture card in I had gotten earlier in years but had problems capturing through VS. I down loaded a free capture software and captured everthing in AVI format. When I play it even though I captured a 29 frames a sec. It run's fast. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated

There are probably fewer than 29.97 frames per second in the file, yet the header says otherwise. You could try analyzing the file using GSpot to find out.

Thanks THoff I downloaded it and will check it. Size of the file is huge for a 15 minute shot. But when converting it to mpeg2 and putting it on DVD it's a lot smaller. I think the total in AVI was about 8 Gig and when I burned it, it came out to be 1.5 gig. Are you then saying my Elsa card just can't capture at that rate? Thanks again

AVI file sizes depend on what codec, if any, is used to compress the audio and video contained in the file. Uncompressed AVI is about 65GB/hour for DVD-resolution video.

I'm not saying that your card isn't capable of capturing a full 29.97 fps, but there may be some issues with your system. Running the hard drive in PIO mode instead of DMA mode would slow it down a great deal and may result in the drive not being able to keep up with the capture. A system that doesn't meet the UVS system requirements (processor speed and RAM) could also cause problems.

Have you tried capturing using ATI's MMC to see if that does a better job?
