VS9 is a lot nicer than I expected.

Post by kebrinton »

I hesitated a long while before installing VS9 because of the problems people were reporting in this forum. My previous experience with VideoStudio was 6 months with VS7 and the whole year with VS8 before VS9 appeared. Too many times I have disregarded the advice, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," and I didn't feel VS8 was broken.

But I needn't have worried.

VS9 is instantly likeable. Obvious improvements include the new Zoom buttons, the cursor inside storyboard clips, the multitrim dial wheel and bigger preview window there, the "fit and burn" option. VS9 recovered easily when another program caused a crash. VS9 is definitely easier to use than VS8.

I did notice some changes in available fonts and could not exactly duplicate some titles I had created with VS8. Also I was totally unable to change to the font color I needed, although the color did change. I tried standard colors, Ulead colors, and Windows colors, but my selection was not what appeared. I'll have to work on this.

One forum member wondered whether installing VS9 would help rectify the OOS problem in VS8 running on the same computer. If I can make myself go back to VS8 for an experiment, I'll look into this.

Two things:

One, I think you need to select the text that you wish to apply the color to.

Two, if it's an NTSC project, the colors will be adjusted to be NTSC color-safe. Because the computer's color space and the TV color space are different, there are colors you can create on the PC that cannot be reproduced on a TV.

"I think you need to select the text that you wish to apply the color to."

Yeah, no, I tried every single different thing but no go.

I was trying for a bright, rich yellow text for my blue "color" background. This same video had that color scheme when created on VS8 but now I've spotted an error in the credits and had to fix that. But now I'm using VS9. I got a yellow, but it was a dull, greenish yellow--not the one displayed in the little "swatch" you choose from. Going into Ulead color picker and Windows color picker did nothing to bring the right yellow. I could choose other colors, white, etc. Just not any particular bright yellow like the one I've been using for more than a year.

I keep thinking there's something I haven't tried.

Thanks for responding. That's interesting, about TV colors.

Yes you have to select the text in a title before font changes will apply.

It also applies a PAL TV colour filter. This can be very frustrating trying to guess the final colour and having to do it a number of times before you get something like what you want.

It is a pity that they didn't add a "TV Palette" to the Ulead or Microsoft palette selection box. You could select your colours after the filter had been applied.
