i want to use a animated backround for my menu. I am going to create it in another program- (combustion or digital fusion)
what format do i use when rendering.
animated backrounds question
I've only used MPEG-2, but you should be able to use any of the supported video formats: (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MICROMV, WMV, AVI, QuickTime)
I think I'd tend towards DVD-compliant MPEG-2 and avoid WMV/QT, because it will give the encoder less to do.

I just imported an 8 second AVI to use as looping motion background, and it works, BUT -- and perhaps this is a limitation of DVDs in general -- the motion will briefly FREEZE when it gets to the loop point. I suppose I could live with that, but I also have two invisible buttons, one which is set as the default highlight button, and this button DISAPPEARS for about a second everytime the menu hits the loop point. So, I've basically got one button that is popping on and off by itself. If I move the highlight to the second button, then that one pops on and off instead.
Weird. Haven't found a way around it yet ...

Yes, there is a pause - even in the professional DVDs.
What I have done in the past is to bring the clip into a video editor and create a separate mpg which has it looping a few times. Usually people make their selection within a minute.
Hopefully, your mpg is seamless (i.e. the end of the clip meshes with the beginning). If not, you can add a transition.

Thanks for the info. Before you posted, I tried to do just what you had suggested -- I took the :08 clip and edited it together several times to make it about a minute. The clips loops perfectly, so it's not evident at all that it's a loop. Unfortunately, I found that because I cheaped-out and bought "Express," there's a 30-second limitation on the menu video duration. D'oh! So I shorted it about 24 seconds, and that's the best I'm going to be able to do.
The only thing I still haven't figured out is why the navigation button disappears briefly at the point where the loop occurs. It might be a problem with my DVD player -- it doesn't happen when I view it on the PC ...
