Need help reinstalling PSP X1

Post by Cassel »

I have all PSP versions installed on my computer, from 8 to the latest. Although it might seem strange to have all of them installed while i dont really USE them all, i still need them to test scripts i am coding for sale afterward.

Recently, i had trouble with X1 with an error message saying it has some problem with it. So, i decided to uninstall it and reinstall it with the CD. I tried several times, but always got this error message during the installation:

Image

Someone suggested i run as Administrator, but it didn't do anything different. After several tries, i thought i might be able to install the trial version and simply add the Serial Number to the trial. I tried installing it, but i would just get to a page where it says that the installation was interrupted (i did NOT stop it, nor did i click Cancel at any point). I found that the program still had files in the Program file, so i found the installation one. I ran it and it installed the trial except that the trial is over (of course). I have a serial number but it asks for a KEY, not a serial number.

Anyone has any suggestion on how i can reinstall my X1?

Try this, Cassel:

1). Go to your Control Panel and turn UAC off, by moving the slider to the bottom; and 2). You might also install X1 outside of the C:\Program Files and C:\Program Files(x86), as Windows still has considerable say in who can do what within those two folders.

Hum.. ok, i know what UAC is, but not sure i understand what is suggested to do with it, or where to do it. I am using Windows 7. Can someone guide me step by step? Pretty please?

Turning off UAC does not turn off Window's default LAU. So you're still running programs and files and such with the least privileges possible. Even administrators. So turning off the UAC still requires running of programs "As administrator" in many cases. So simply turning it off isn't enough for all tasks. If you find it still doesn't work you'll need to run as administrator again. Though it will prevent registry and file virtualization, so that's a good thing. :D

Say what you will about the UAC but it does perform a decent service and is hardly in the way with Windows 7. So for most people I recommend you leave it on.

Here is the simple process to turn it off from Microsoft.

OK, we can do that, Cassal! Go to the Start button -->Control Panel -->System and Security -->Action Center -->Change User Account Control Settings... A window will pop up, with a vertical slider just left of center: slide the button down to "Never notify". This will effectively revert the Win7 security to a level somewhat akin to that of Windows XP.

Following this, you can enhance your security by downloading and installing Microsoft Security Essentials from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... essentials. This very nice application replaces the default security app - "Windows Defender", and because of that, we need to go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/wind ... -on-or-off - as we now need to disable it. That's it!

You should now find your installs go much easier. I would caution that you should always run with the W7 firewall "On" at all times, Security Essentials also "on" - it presents a green icon in the lower-right corner when it's on, turning red when off, and buff, when the definition database in no longer current. It's free, and is as good as, if not better that any other anti-virus software on the market. The last point I should mention, Cassal - your security is only as good as your password. No names, no birthdays, 2 or 3 upper-case, a couple of lower case, a couple of numbers, and a couple of characters, such as a ":", or a "%", etc.. My personal pw is 12 characters long.

OK? :D

Totally no luck. I tried disabling the UAC, running as administrator, installing from the downloaded trial version, installing from the CD, installing in another folder than the Program ones, i always get the same error message OR i would get a message that the serial number is wrong. I am unsure how to completely remove all traces of the program too. When i uninstall the program, i am not sure it does uninstall it all, as there are still a ton of files. I am kind of stuck :(

Have you tried using your CD to install PSPX1 on another computer to see if the cD has not been corrupted?

.... continuing the saga from yesterday, Cassel - from the Protexis message - this looks like a permissions issue with the pc. The Protexis application sits in C:\ProgramData\Protexis..... rt-click on it -->Properties --> Security, and see who the owner is, and what the permissions are for each entry. It should be owned by the Administrators group (full control), with SYSTEM having the same set. Users should have Read &Exec, Read, List and Spec permissions ticked. Clicking on Advanced --> Owner, should give you Administrators as the owner.

Re getting rid of spurious registry problems and errors, you can download a couple of other apps - Eusing Registry Cleaner (free) and Comodo System Utilities. Eusing does a splendid job of cleaning the registry, and Comodo CSU, while doing a similar job, also has a number of additional functions. Lastly - to uninstall programs - try Revo Uninstaller, which does a better job than the Control Panel's uninstaller.

aside from the things that have been suggested already... you may want to try disabling your firewall and anti-virus, since there have been issue with security software and the protexis. You can also try reinstalling using a new Windows user with admin rights. If you do not have an extra windows user, then you can create by going to CONTROL PANEL> USER ACCOUNTS. Make sure that you set the new user to have the admin privileges.

I know this is an old topic, but curious to know if you ever found a solution. I had this same problem with PSP X on my Windows 7 computer. Finally had to uninstall it in control panel and then was able to reinstall it.

It turned out that the serial number had to be entered in a place that was not called serial number, so it was confusing me. After more trial and error i found that out. And it worked. I dont remember by heart where i had to enter it, but it was not called "serial number" as you would expect.

Hope it works the same for you.

It did reinstall for me after using control panel to remove it. But don't know what happened to break it; was getting that protexis error just by opening the program. I don't use X often but want it working when I do. It would be wonderful to be able to use just one version of PSP all the time and forget about all the others but have not been able to do that lately.
