X3 to X4 upgrade price
Am I reading this right? The current (May '12) pricing of X4 is such that the cost of upgrading from X3 is only $10 off the price of buying it cold??

yes - it looks as though your reading it correct, but $10 off of $60 looks like more than 16% discount to me - a pretty good deal I would say.

$60 is already a discounted price. At full price you'd get an even deeper discount, but it would cost more. If you had a discount code you could take an additional 10% off of whatever price you get. (or whatever the code is good for as long as it hasn't expired).

It's just that 16% doesn't sound like a lot when I've already paid for 78% of the code in it...BrianCee wrote:yes - it looks as though your reading it correct, but $10 off of $60 looks like more than 16% discount to me - a pretty good deal I would say.

You'll occasionally see great deals just after a product is released or during a Holiday sale (Thanksgiving in the U.S. or Christmas time for example).gning wrote:It's just that 16% doesn't sound like a lot when I've already paid for 78% of the code in it...BrianCee wrote:yes - it looks as though your reading it correct, but $10 off of $60 looks like more than 16% discount to me - a pretty good deal I would say.

but if you were buying a new car you wouldn't expect to pay almost nothing for it because you have already paid for an engine and wheels on your existing car.gning wrote:It's just that 16% doesn't sound like a lot when I've already paid for 78% of the code in it...BrianCee wrote:yes - it looks as though your reading it correct, but $10 off of $60 looks like more than 16% discount to me - a pretty good deal I would say.
Corel is no different to the vast majority of software providers in expecting you to pay for a an upgrade to a new version of their software - in fact many software companies do not provide any sort of discount for upgrading so that's a bonus from Corel.

But that's not the same engine. This analogy totally fails -- it's more as if replacing your 2011 Accord with a 2012 involved buying only the individual parts that had actually changed. It's not a workable metaphor in either case, really.BrianCee wrote:but if you were buying a new car you wouldn't expect to pay almost nothing for it because you have already paid for an engine and wheels on your existing car.
If that's the accepted norm now, it just shows how far we've sunk and how willing we've been to accept less. There are still software sellers I deal with who price upgrades with a sense of proportion to the degree of add-on you're getting... such as charging nothing for v11 if you just paid for v10.BrianCee wrote:Corel is no different to the vast majority of software providers in expecting you to pay for a an upgrade to a new version of their software - in fact many software companies do not provide any sort of discount for upgrading so that's a bonus from Corel.
You'd think they'd at least price it below what third-party sellers are likely to charge pretty soon for the boxed physical media non-upgrade edition.
I develop web-based business software... in that world, the very idea of ever charging for an upgrade is unthinkable.
I'm not saying Corel should give me software for peanuts... I'm saying the ratio doesn't make sense. I'm not saying which end should be adjusted.
