Remove or Reduce wind noise

Post by roykarin »

Using Corel VS X4. I am trying to reduce or remove wind noise from video clips. These clips also have narration, which at times is inaudible due to the background wind noise! Has anyone discovered a way to remove or reduce this background noise? Thanks.

:( If the noise is that bad, there's not much you can do. Your best bet is to either re-record and lip-sync, or use subtitles. If you go with subtitles, it's usually best to lower the volume when the audio is bad to make it less annoying.

A high-pass filter (maybe 200Hz) should help a little. That will knock-out the low-frequency noise without affecting the voice-frequencies too much. (I use a separate audio editor, so I don't know how to do that with Video Studio... I'm just assuming Video Studio has a high-pass filter.)

Noise reduction works best when you have a constant low-level background noise such as a little bum or a little tape-hiss... That is, it works best when you don't really need it. If someone is doing a news report and there's a barking dog, or a siren in the background, that can't be removed. And, the stuff you see in spy-movies where they pull a conversation out of the background noise just doesn't exist in real-life.

On-location movie dialog is re-recorded in the studio. With on-location news, they use a wind-sock over the mic and they speak directly into the mic... Still, wind-noise, and other noises, often get-through.

Thank you DVDDoug for your quick reply. I think it's not really possible to remove noise by just using X4. I will stick with way I have been 'hiding' the sound. The way I mask the noise is simply reducing the background noise (usually wind noise) to a low level. I think it's good to have a slight background noise on outside video clips, however, this lowers the narration to a level which is almost inaudible. I then voice over the text again, usually correcting any mistakes there might have been in the original!! When played back the original narration can't be heard!
