Star Rating from RAW

Post by bear_sk »

Some Cameras (Canon 60D, 600D, 5D mark III, 1D X) allow rating of files with stars (0-5 stars). After opening folder with these files, I don't see rating of files in Aftershot.

Are you importing and using a catalog or the File System tab?

Which is irrelevant actually.

This is the first time I hear about ratings in Canon raw files (AS does support the IPTC stuff in the new Nikons, so getting ratings in from the Canons should be not a big deal).
Can you make one available for examination?

cheers

I use Star Ratings for Canon Raw Files but they are held in the .CR2 file itslef and are only visible in Canon Software such as Digital Photo Professional (DPP) and ZoomBrowser (ZB). They are not visible in Windows Explorer, ASP or PSP.

Each .CR2 file is large (25Mb) and I don't have a quick and easy way to make one available but I could give it some thought.

That sounds like Canon added it to their makernotes rather than using the standard IPTC or XMP tags. Sigh. :roll:

I have looked in DPP, ZB, ASP, PSP, Exifer (which won't open .CR2) and Windows Explorer and I cannot find the Canon RAW Star Rating anywhere including in the Makernotes. :-(

Linux exiftool is able to read this ratings, and assign it to XMP group of tags:
$ exiftool -G -Rating 5D*
======== 5D3_1656.CR2
[XMP] Rating : 2
======== 5D3_1736.CR2
[XMP] Rating : 3
======== 5D3_1783.CR2
[XMP] Rating : 4
======== 5D3_1820.CR2
[XMP] Rating : 5
======== 5D3_1912.CR2
[XMP] Rating : 0
======== 5D3_2006.CR2
[XMP] Rating : 1

That looks promising. So ASP should be able to see the same.

Looks like Exiftool found it in XMP--so ASP should see it. On my system it's never had a problem with XMP-based ratings. Exiftool is the go-to metadata reader (there is ExifToolGUI for a friendlier inteface on Windows).
