X5 - Transition without cutting off clip

I'm using the Fade to Black transition in X5.

The problem is that the fade out cuts off the end of the clip before it fades into the next one.

I want the fade effect but don't want to lose anything of the clips even if it means there will be a longer black screen during the fade.

Is this possible and if so how?

Welcome to the forum Dave.

I am not sure what you are expecting to see when you use 'fade to black' - by definition that means that your video will continuously fade from full brightness to black - so somewhere along the line the end of your video will disappear into the black.

you could put a short color block at the end of your video and then add the fade to black at the end of that - but then you would have your full video - followed by a sudden change to colour then a fade to black.

The same will be true of just about every transition - in order to "transist" (?) - the two videos - or video and colour block must be made to effectively overlap so that the view can change from one to the other - somewhere during that process one must disappear and the other appear. The fade to black is basically a crossfade transition with built in black colour block.

The usual solution to the effect is to make your video just that little bit longer so that you can lose the little bit on the end without losing any thing important from your video

Thanks for the response. I did try adding a black block at the end but it is kind of an abrupt transition.

These are really old movies that have been digitized so I don't have the option of adding trailing footage. I was hoping for a graceful way to transition between clips without losing anything but it looks like that won't happen quite the way I wanted.

1. Create the snapshot of the last frame of your clip.
2. Add it to the end of your clip.
3. Adjust photo duration to desired length ( 3 sec or so )
4. Add your transition.

It will look like you movie will stop before it transition, but this is better then going to black.

Unfortunately when we apply a transition between two clips the clips are literally overlapped by the duration of the transition, effectively reducing the run time.

Adding a still image (snapshot) mentioned by Peter100 is very effective and probability create the effect you need.
Making the image the same length as the transition will reduce the video still/stop to a minimum.

You could try editing in the overlay tracks, you would be able to use the "Directions and Styles" to fade in and out of your clips.
Adjust the pause duration using the bar immediately below the preview screen.

The default pause duration is one third of the length of the clip, so a 3 minute clip will have a 1 minute fade, not very useful, however cut the clip at 9 seconds, the fade will be 3 seconds.
