Import from DVD
I have copied a recorded TV programme from a PVR hard disc onto a DVD and then copied the DVD onto the hard disk of my computer. When I try to use my trial version of VS XV to import the "digital media", it first shows what I might call empty thumbnails. Then I get a message saying "The file formats of some selected files are not supported". Clicking on OK then produces a message saying "There is no valid clip". I should add that hovering over the empty thumbnails describes the format as DVD+VR. What am I doing wrong please? Just incidentally, I have been able to import the clips into PowerDirector.

Re: Import from DVD
Hi
First try importing the files directly from disc
----------------------------------------
When you copied the files to the hard drive you should copy the entire Video_TS folder
This is the folder you should select when using Import Digital Media.
When viewing the thumbnails some may indicate Titles and others Chapters.
Are you selecting the thumbnails by clicking the small box top left.
Other options
Using Windows Explorer
The Video _TS folder contain Vob files usually named VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VOB etc each being 1 GB the last being smaller.
Rename these files to VTS_01_1.mpg etc
Try importing these to the timeline in the normal manner.
--------------------------------
PVR
generally you have to finalise the disc in the PVR before importing to the pc, RW types i believe automatically finalise on ejecting,.
Are the discs finalised, are they DVD+ R or DVD+RW? you indicate RW?

Re: Import from DVD
Trevor,
Thank you for taking the trouble to reply. I have tried all you suggest without success. Just incidentally, saying that I had imported the files successfully using PowerDirector was a bit premature as it turned out that the video had imported but not the audio - maybe that gives a clue, but not to me as I don't understand these things. What, however, I have definitely been able to do is import the whole file into Windows Moviemaker and convert it to a wmv format which VideoStudio is happy with. Nevertheless, I cannot help feeling that there is no logic in that - surely VS can recognise all the formats that Moviemaker can?

Re: Import from DVD
If you re-named the Vob files to use Mpg extension.
When you tried to import to Video Studio what error message did you get.?
to insert the files to the timeline..............
Right click the timeline, select Insert Video, browse for the re-named files.
Ok
I have just run my own tests
I have a LG DVD recorder, using a DVD+RW disc which I formatted to DVD-VR as you had mentioned that format.
I also had the option to use Video DVD which I would normally use.
I recorded two videos to the disc.
Inserted disc into the PC CD drive
Right click VS timeline and select Insert Media
browse to locate the CD Drive, Interestingly the VideoTS folder does not exist.
I am sure others will comment but I don’t think DVD-VR types create a DVD Folder.
To be honest i don’t understand the difference but i have always used DVD Video types.
From the import window I could see the two thumbnails which eventually displayed the frame.
The import completed OK
So have you tried formatting the disc as DVD Video type discs instead of DVD - VR types
Even so i was able to import from a DVD-VR disc

Re: Import from DVD
Trevor,
Thank you so much for the time you have spent on this. After a few false starts, the approach of renaming the files to MPG format succeeded. Interestingly, as part of my fiddling about, I found that I could import the files into VS11 without changing the file format, so the change seems to be a bit of a step backwards.
