VS X5 hangs on start !

Post by mad eira »

hi. on my asus g73j laptop with win7 64 bit videostudio x4 runs with no problems. for months.
but last week i updated to x5. and when i start x5, only the splash screen appears.
first with the progress bar on bottom, after a few seconds the progress bar disappears but the splash screen stays visible.
and nothing. the application does not start. just the splash screen stays visible.
i have to kill the application by the task manager to make the splash screen disappear.
several reboots, deinstalls and reinstalls without any change.

i have found no log file for x5. so i have no clue what the problem is.
maybe someone give me a hint where to look.

by the way x4 still runs without problems on my laptop
and i have tested x5 with and without x4 installed.
but i only see the splash screen every time.

thanks for any help

There are a number of reasons why this happens and since VS X5 runs properly on your other computer, this means that the problem with either with the software or the system itself. If you have not used the program since the day you installed it, then you may want to try and update the directx on your computer.

Update directX: http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/window ... tx-11.aspx

If that did not work, try reinstalling the program. First uninstall the program via Control Panel > ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. Then redownload or just run the downloaded installer.

i also tried reinstalling several times. no change.

i forgot to mention... my laptop is
asus g73jh
with ati mobility radeon hd 5870
directx 11 is installed
quicktime 7.7.1
realtek 6.0.1.5978

Hi

Strange you have not had more response to this issue.

I don’t use W7 so a little limited in my experience here so clutching at straws........

From what i remember the initial start asks you to register the product, simply inserting the e-mail address or your Corel account is sufficient, if you haven't an account one is created.
Obviously you are not getting that far.

Access the Corel web site and add X5 to your Corel Products list then try again.

-------------------------
installing the program from a new user account has helped for some users with installation issues. the new user account could them be removed.

You should install having admin rights, the program should run using admin rights.

------------------------

The initial splash screen can be ridiculously slow to react, especially the first time. Be patient? Although i guess you have been.

-----------------------

When the program first starts a new folder is created:-
C:\Documents and Settings\Trevor\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0\en-US

this is for XP but the location should be within your Documents folder structure of W7
If your pc is inhibiting this new build then maybe the program will pause/freeze, again maybe an admin issue.

Thats my thoughts so far

hi lata

thank you for your straws :) but unfortunately it does not work out.

i. my vs x5 was already registered as upgrade version on the corel website. i registered it again manually - now as normal version not upgrade - and start x5. but again only the splash screen.

ii. i un-installed my x5 and re-installed it with a different admin user. again only the splash screen.

iii. i start x5 with admin rights anyhow. but splash screen.

iv. i stared for hours at the not changing splash screen. so it shouldn't be a time issue.

v. a directory C:\Users\...\Documents\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0 was created. but it is empty.

vi. i also tried it with and without turned off windows firewall. and with adding x5 to the list of programs which are allowed to communicate through the firewall. again only the splash screen.

nevertheless i really appreciate your help. i am really lost here.

My wife's laptop has X5 installed when launching the program the UAC shows first.

Can you disable UAC before starting Video Studio

thanks again lata :)

yes the uac shows first when starting x5 and i give always the permission to make changes on my computer.
and the splash screen opens and ... nothing. to stop x5 i have to kill the application by task manager.
for testing i have just turned the uac off. same result.

thx kingston:
there are 40 gb left on my system drive and 8 gb ram. launching x5 should be possible.

for such cases like mine there should be a debug mode in x5 which gives me a detailed log file.
to analyze where x5 hangs and what the problem is.
i wonder if there are (maybe hidden) command line parameters of x5 which might help me here.

don't you think this might be a driver incompatibility ? quicktime ? ati radeon ?

my graphic card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 with driver:

I had trouble starting VideoStudio a couple of times. What I do is delete 5 files that are found in this folder of mine: C:\Documents and Settings\Kingston\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0\en-US.

The procedure I follow is to exit out of VideoStudio. Make sure VideoStudio isn't running by checking the Task Manager and killing the VStudio.exe process if it is running.

Go to your application data folder by going Start > Run and then entering the following:

%AppData%\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0\en-US (or whatever your language/country code is).

The folder is normally hidden and you have to turn on the option to display hidden files and folders by going to the Control Panel and running Folder Options.

*Do not make the mistake of going to the Program Files folder and deleting the same named files.*

Rename these 5 files by appending your initials (such as .mad) onto the end of the filename:

ulaft.dat
uleio.dat
ulvft.dat
UlVfx40.dat
ulvst.dat
VFilter.rsf

After doing that, start VideoStudio and wait for the files to be rebuilt. You will see a progress bar as the names of effects are scanned. VideoStudio will open up when that's done. If it doesn't succeed the first time, try doing it again.

EDIT: in addition to the 5 .dat files listed above, include VFilter.rsf. This is where duplicate and triplicate thumbnails come from even after deleting the actual duplicate and triplicate vft effects.

I just ran into the same problem after uninstalling X5 and then installing it again. VideoStudio splash screen and then poof.

I believe what I did wrong is install every NewBlue effect that I had purchased along with the NewBlue effects that come with X5 and with the NewBlue Titler. In some cases there was three of each effect. I did not go through the vft_plug folder and delete duplicates. No matter what I did, including renaming ulvft.dat, VideoStudio would not load. Too many effects is what I thought then.

After deleting the duplicates, VideoStudio fully loaded. In the effects library, however, were duplicate and triplicate thumbnails. Renaming ulvft.dat and those other .dat files didn't get rid of the extra thumbnails.

Only when I renamed ulvft.dat and VFilter.rsf in the application data folder AND the same-named files in the ULead.dat folder in Program Files did I get rid of the extra thumbnails. After doing that the library contained the correct number of effects. I also took my initials off ulvft.dat and VFilter.rsf files in the ULead.Dat folder in Program Files. Those files didn't get rebuilt in the ULead.Dat folder, but temporarily renaming them did something to allow the correct number of effects to be recognized instead of starting over with the basic set.

Sidenote: When I tried renaming the "C:\Documents and Settings\Kingston\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0" folder and let the entire folder get rebuilt, I ended up with the basic set of effects as if I hadn't installed any of the effects that I owned. Neither Graffiti nor Titler were in the library. After digging around I noticed that the ulvft.dat and Vfilter.rsf files in the application data folder and the same-named files in the Ulead.dat folder were the same size. I remembered that one of the original steps I took a few weeks ago was to rename just the files in the Ulead.dat folder, and when that didn't work, I renamed the other one in the application data folder, 15.0. The effects library was rebuilt correctly back then. This time when I installed X5, I didn't do that initially.

Hi mad eira

There may be some confusion regarding the folders which Kingston and I refer.

for XP The folder is in the C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\

Notice its within a Ulead Systems folder???????

For Windows 7
C:\Users\User Name\AppData\Roaming\Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0\en-US

You seem to indicate C:\Documents and Settings\Trevor\My Documents structure

Go to Start-Run / Search add %AppData% should take you to the correct structure
find the Ulead Systems folder

Kingston

When i allow the full folder to be re created all my installed filters are also showing including Graffiti nor Titler

hello again

ok i have found the folder Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0 :)

and i renamed
ulaft.dat, uleio.dat, ulvft.dat, UlVfx40.dat, ulvst.dat, VFilter.rsf
in that folder before launching vs x5.
again only the splash screen.

after that i additionally renamed in the application folder Corel\Corel VideoStudio Pro X5\Ulead.dat
the files ulvft.dat and Vfilter.rsf
but again just the splash screen.

i also removed the folder Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0 completely before launching x5
no change
and removed the folder completely before reinstalling x5
no change

on the other side i have no additional effects installed in x5. so it's maybe no surprise.

in addition to that i have uninstalled itunes and quicktime as i have read that quicktime may cause problems with x5.
nothing

you guys are really great giving so much thought about my problem.
and i am really sorry that there is no real progress
i still see the x5 splash screen and only the splash screen :(

This may be completely irrelevant but I had the same symptoms recently with X4. It turned out to be a piece of malware called bprotector, which could be seen in task manager but could not be uninstalled. I posted earlier:

It might be worth checking.

Hi mad eira

I am unsure which folder you removed.

Re-name the folder "Corel VideoStudio Pro" to "Corel VideoStudio Pro Copy" from

Ulead Systems\Corel VideoStudio Pro\15.0
----------------------------

We had some problems with the "Movie templates Manager" retaining any changes.
This turned out to be a "Read Only" issue. the system being unable to change the files.

With this in mind, if VS is trying to create files before launching and some source files are set as Read Only then the new files will not be created, the program may simply hang.

You need a strange mind to be thinking on these lines.

The source folder en-US should be here C:\Program Files\Corel\Corel VideoStudio Ultimate X5

I have just set my en_US source folder as read only and the program refuses to start but does give an error, unable to load library.
All i have to do is get it working again, any ideas

My next ides is to send you a en-US folder, not sure if that will work?
