VS7 SE: Crashing When Creating WMV/MPEG When MP4 is Used

Post by dching »

I received VS7 SE Basic as part of a bundled package from my Olympus camera. I've tried to create a WMV file using an MP4 clip that was created from the Olympus. However, when trying to create the WMV file in the share menu item, the program crashes at the 95% point, causing me to perform a hard reset.

However, when creating the WMV file using MP1/MP2 and/or JPEG files, there is no problem; and the program creation completes normally.

Do I need an additional CODEX to handle the MP4 clip or is there a program bug?

Any help and insight would be appreciated.

Thanks. :D

VS 7, as far as I am aware, will not handle MPEG-4 files at all. VS8 and 9 will only handle them with an additional plug-in for which you have to pay.

Thanks. What's really strange is that this program was bundled with the Olympus digital camera which takes MP4 video. Why would they bundle a video suite with the camera if you can't use it. Strange marketing.

One would think that the program would work when they bundled it or else they would get a lot of disgruntled consumers.

I';ve got a similar problem. (olympus camera supplied with VS7SE)

MP4 files can work with VS7SE as imported clips. They cannot be output but can be imported. As far as I know, the only reason you would want the MP4 plugin is to output MP4 files.

When both rendering and previewing video projects in VS7SE, an error typically occurs in ulaacenc.dll. On odd, very rare occasions on various machines, I have gotten VS7SE to work with one or two short projects (using MP4 video so it's not that it's completely unsupported by VS7SE) but cannot find an obvious cause or fix for the problem. I have a theory that it may be down to imported MP4 video length/size or maybe project size but could not say for certain.

The interesting thing is that I downloaded the VS9 Trial edition and this doesn't work properly either. This crashes with an error in ulaspdec.dll when encoding, although usually previewing the project works fine (a step up from VS7SE).

The best advice that I've gotten from Ulead is to purchase the full upgrade but given past performance, I'm reluctant. Any suggestions?
