I use the term “Drivers” as not to confuse.
Microsoft has installed Generic Cam drivers, often several cam models fit one Generic Driver type, all controlled by an *.inf file. Since Microsoft uses the Generic equivalent they sacrifice many capabilities of the many Cam’s to the Manufacturers chagrin. As a result some Cam Manufacturers will create their own OEM *.inf and sometimes newer drivers to accompany. What can happen occasionally, Microsoft finds the Cam, recognizes it as one of those listed as a Generic. However, the Cam will not work correctly because the newer *.inf file has not been installed, or this may include drivers. Microsoft will not look for that new file since it has one that it considers workable. It is therefore advisable to update if the Cam is not recognized using the Wizard, especially if you expect to use the Cam with other applications than VS.

Keenart, I can agree with you to some extend, not completely though. When WIN installs the generic driver for a camcorder, it should at least work. Maybe you would not get certain functionality of your particular device, but it should and would work. Furthermore, when you hook up your camcorder to capture, all you want to do is capture, right? I have set up 3 different camcorders so far with my own system and a number of different once for friends. Never have I needed a driver. All one has to do is select the Ulead capture plugin and the Microsoft device control.

For the Most part I would agree with you, but in a rare occasion, especially with SP1 and 1a, there can be a problem with the Sony Cam through Firewire recognition. A failure to recognize the Cam was the trouble. Microsoft was to correct this problem by SP2, and Sony made changes as well. ergo It wouldn't hurt to try the Wizard and use the I have a Disc to see if indeed there are newer files, that might correct the problem.
I stated the previous and the above as reference so that should this be the problem then Jan will have some ground with which to work.
Diagnostics are sometimes at best a, "Hit and Miss Technique," until you find the right solution.
