No sound on AVI files?
Whenever I import an AvI file into Corel Video Studio Pro X5 there is no sound whatsoever. Other file types work fine, but any and all AVIs I try will not play back any audio. I have tried at least a dozen from different origins and no success. Any ideas why?

Re: No sound on AVI files?
You don't have the right codec or codecs installed.
There are over 800 different avi file types, each needs it's own codec to work.
If you don't know what sort of an avi it is this will tell you

Then find the codec made by the manufacturer and install just as installing codec packs can often cause more problems than they solve.

Just adding to what skier mentioned. Here are some of the codecs that you may want to install.

Re: No sound on AVI files?
I installed AVIcodec and checked out the codec used by the avi files, xvid mpeg4, and apparently I have that on my pc already, but I downloaded it again anyway and installed it. However, the problem still isn't fixed -- plays video just fine but still no audio? I'm using a codec pack so I'm going to try uninstalling it and only installing the applicable codecs to see if that does anything

Re: No sound on AVI files?
This is a long shot, but just in case...
What version of VS are you using? When I was using VS 11.5, importing DV-AVI (using WinDV) used to work just fine, but then for some reason VS suddenly would no longer play the audio on my DV-AVI files. After trying various fixes, I gave up and upgraded to VS X3 and DV-AVI audio worked just fine again. (Under the principle of "if it ain't broke don't fix it" I don't plan to upgrade to a newer version of VS until I upgrade to an HD camera, but I presume DV-AVI plays just fine with VS X4 and X5, too.)

Re: No sound on AVI files?
Well, I uninstalled my codec pack and installed some of the ones suggested, and now audio work for avi in corel -- however some other problems were created in my external player such as movies being desynced and freezing on keyframes and whatnot, but I guess that means that something in that codec pack was useful, now if I could just narrow down what...

Re: No sound on AVI files?
I always recommend installing just the codec you need from it's own manufacturer, rather than codec packs.

Re: No sound on AVI files?
the problem is that i can't always figure out exactly what codec i specifically need, even with the codec information appliances, they tell me what i need to run it, but not necessarily what i need to run it well -- as is the case with audio lag -- sure I can view and hear the file and the system says i have the codecs to do so but i need more than that at times.skier-hughes wrote:I always recommend installing just the codec you need from it's own manufacturer, rather than codec packs.
Also, off topic, but can corel videostudio pro x5 show waveforms on audio and video files? my audio and video blocks are just bocks, with no overlayed sound wave forms, and I find it hard to line up certain things to audio without seeing the waveforms as they occur.

Re: No sound on AVI files?
CODEC stand for COmpression DECompression.
One codec is used to compress the file, then you use the same codec to decompress it.
YOu only need the right one, no other.
Using apps like avicodec or gspot tell you which codec was used to make the file, if you don't have it, you google for that codec and install it.
Now if only life was that easy.
Playing a file using a media player is totally different to editing a file using VS or any other editing app. The way they pull in the codec to enable you to edit it is different so not all files that you can play with ease can you edit with ease.
You may find some apps will edit some file types, then other apps edit others with the same ease.
Sometimes it's trial and error, using more than one app, or converting a problem file to a file type that can be edited in your prefered app.
You should be able to see a waveform, but of course, this might be one of the problems of a not totally compatible file type.
And if life was that easy we'd all be happy............ but.........
One pc with VS might edit a file, whereas another pc with VS may not. This might be down to the programmes installed, or even the order they were installed................

the audio I'm using are wav files, wouldn't those be compatible?skier-hughes wrote: You should be able to see a waveform, but of course, this might be one of the problems of a not totally compatible file type.
Also, is there envelope editing so I can edit the volume of a clip along the timeline, all I see are 'fade in' and 'fade out' which are not flexible enough for what I want.

Re: No sound on AVI files?
Unfortunately inserting a compatible file into a timeline with incompatible files doesn't always mean the good file will work.
Again I am assuming you are working with the wav with the avi you first mentioned? As until now, I'd assumed you were just using the audio from the avi file, as this is the first time you've mentioned a wav file.
What happens if you start a totally new project and just work on the wav file?
