Crop tool artifacts

Post by fotojrb »

Version: PSP x4 w/ SP1
O/S: Win 7 Pro

I've been using x4 for several months, and in the past few weeks I've been encountering strange artifacts of the Crop tool. If I move the crop rectangle, it sometimes (but not always: see below) leaves a black line or lines of varying thickness where the rectangle had been. Here are a few possible clues:
  • - It appears to happen only with images that contain layers.
    - An F5 refresh does not get rid of the artifacts.
    - Flattening the image does.
    - It appears, I think, to occur only when moving the crop rectangle (not resizing), but I won't swear to that.
    - I have on at least one occasion been able to save the file with the lines as part of the image.
Has anyone else encountered this? If so, any ideas/suggestions?

Sidebar: Is there any way to post an image to this forum? I might be able to do a screen capture. (I see the Img button above the text box, but I haven't been able to make it work.)

Hi Photojrb,
Set up a photobucket account, and load your image up there. Hover your cursor over the image on that site and a box will appear withvarious addresses. Click on the direct image address and it will be copied to the clip board. Then here hit the IMG button and paste your image Url between the tags. Your image will appear when you post.
Do the lines disappear when you roll your mouse wheel to rescale your image ?

If the program was working before and the problem just happened, this can be a problem with your work space and directx.

Updating directx and resetting your workspace should do the trick.

Update directX
Direct X: http://on-msn.com/aLrk0j (WinXP)
Direct X: http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/window ... tx-11.aspx

To reset workspace. You can do that by pressing and holding down the SHIFT key then double-click on the PSP icon then when you received the message "DO YOU WAN TO RESTORE PAINTSHOP Pro TO ITS DEFAULT STATE?" just click OK.

Here's a screen capture:

Image

Note the layers: Background / Copy of Background / Local tone mapping adjustment layer / Curves adjustment layer

The image opens with the Copy of Background layer selected, and that's where the problem occurs. If I select another layer or flatten the layers, the lines go away. I have on at least one occasion, however, saved the image and had the lines become part of the image, which is something I really don't want.

I ran the DirectX diagnostics, and it said there were no problems. I'll look a little further before I start messing with it and the workspace.
