frustrating re-installation issues for X2

Post by blacktooth »

I'm a very casual/occasional user of VideoStudio since 4.0. I later upgraded to 8.0, then upgraded to 12.0 (X2) about 2 years ago. I used a Compaq Presario and had no problems whatsoever. In Nov 2011, I decided it was time to upgrade my 7 year-old computer. I got a Dell Inspiron with Windows7 an i-5 processor. I then installed my X2 on the new Dell. Life was still good. Then last month, I bought a new HD camcorder and decided to buy a newer version of VideoStudio. X4 was discounted, so I bought it outright (no upgrade). I installed X4 on my new computer, and life was still good.

What happened next was, I decided that one computer with VideoStudio was good, so 2 would be even better. I tried to install X4 on my old computer (Windows XP, 2.8 gh processor). It would install, but upon trying to launch it, the Ulead graphic would come up for a few seconds and disappear. A couple of error messages would come up, and that was it. The software would never launch. I contacted Ulead customer service, and they initially told me I could have VideoStudio installed on 2 computers. But when they couldn't diagnose my problem, they escalated it to someone else, who told me that I could only have it on 1 computer. They also told me that my old computer lacked a dual core processor, therefore X4 couldn't run on it anyway. I'm still not sure if I believe that.

So then I tried to reinstall X2 on the old computer. After all, it had worked just fine on that computer for 2 years. Now, when I try to launch X2, the Ulead graphic comes up for a few seconds and disappears. No error messages come up. I've 100% uninstalled X2 on my new computer. I've uninstalled and reinstalled X2 on my old computer at least 4 times. Still nothing works. I contacted Ulead again, and they said that they can no longer offer support for X2, but they recommended that I set up a new administrator account on my computer and install and launch it from there. I've done that, and X2 still won't launch.

VideoStudio 8.0 and 4.0 are still installed on my old computer and seem to work fine.

I'd sure like to have the capability of running X2 occasionally on my old computer. Can anyone offer my any advice?
Thank you.

One of the unfortunate things about doing a normal Windows un-install of many software programmes is that they still leave bits behind which confuse a re-install - VideoStudio is one of those programmes. There is a procedure you can follow which is a full manual un-install of the programme leaving a completely clean computer to start again. You can find that procedure here :-

Thanks very much for the advice. I spent a couple of hours this weekend working on the uninstall/reinstall. I followed the instructions exactly and still have the exact same problem. I downloaded the Microsoft cleanup utility, which isn't offered any more but I still was able to find on a website. I ran through that a couple of times, uninstalling everything, but still had no luck. I downloaded the replacement for the cleanup utility, Microsoft FixIt, and tried that a couple of times. Still no luck. Perhaps I've got some larger issue, although I haven't noticed any problems running other software on this computer.
