DVD capture = IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!
I want to import footage from a DVD into MSP. So i start up video capture, set the appropiate capture plugin, press REC, the box comes up asking where i want to save it and all that, i navigate to the Video_TS folder on the DVD, click OK, then the box comes up with the scenes, and immediatly after the scene box comes up i get the error "send report to microsoft" or "don't send" box, and capture closes. i've tried repeatedly and still no luck.
the dvd i wish to capture from has no copywright protection, as it is a home movie...
any help is grealy apprecieated!

Msp7 has very limited DVD import facilities, except for DVD-VR (DVD-RAM) format. The low cost DVD MF4 Disk Creator is more versatile in this respect and there are many third party possibilities, as well. If the DVD is simple, then the VOB files can be copied and renamed to mpg, as suggested, but this works only for the video files and not the accessory ones. To rename, right-click on the file, choose rename and replace the .vob by .mpg. There will be a warning about changing extensions but ignore it.

Are you sure you are actually changing the file extension? You said that the name was "VTS_01_2" so to me that means that the file extension (.vob) was not showing. Therefore, when you added the ".mpg" it only added that to the filename and didn't change the file type.
In "Explorer" go to "Tools" and then "Folder Options" and click on the "View" tab. In "Advanced Settings" scroll down and UNcheck "Hide extensions for known file types." Close "Explorer" and then when you reopen it all the files will show their extensions.
Once this is done, your .vob file should show the .vob extension. If you didn't change the filename back it will read, "VTS_01_2.mpg.vob." Hopefully, this was what the issue was and now it will work for you.

I know you've pretty much solved your problem, but there's no explanation (yet) as to why you're getting the video editor crash.
Have you tried putting a nonzero value into the "preallocate" box? It seems odd to me that you're asking it to preallocate space for the capture, and then not giving it any...
